packet loss and headaches

packet loss and headaches

to verify, i have the r6700v3 but apparently that isnt a valid option.

anyways, i got this nighthawk router a while back and i havent used it in about a year due to the packet loss and latency issues i started getting one day. Today i decided to try it again and its still garbage.

For some unexplained reason my packet loss is through the roof and it lags like hell.

for reference, i did a packet loss test using this site: https://packetlosstest.com/

i ran two tests, one for fortnite and one for apex, since those are two of my most played shooters, and i have between 9 and 13% packet loss everytime (if im lucky, sometimes it'll say 99% lmao)

its worth noting that i have had no packet loss with my original router (i have had a little bit the last day or two but i blame that on the snow storm, plus my ISP probably got over FEET of snow)

I did a factory reset of the nighthawk and retested and its still bad. Not sure what i can do, if need be i can buy another router but i just need to know what will work with my internet package and my current modem from my ISP.

in event i need to buy another one, ill leave here my ISP modem and speed

currently i'm with WOW! and have 1gb package (so i can go to 1000mbps) and they gave me a technicolor docsis 3.1 wireless gateway.

If i can get this resolved somehow or even just get a new router under $200 that'd be great. Appreciate any time you can offer.

Re: packet loss and headaches

Not all manufacturer's bridge mode works properly. Try the modem in modem/router mode and put the netgear in AP mode. See if that works.

Re: packet loss and headaches

What modem is it connected to? (model number)

Firwmare on the router?

What platform are you playing on?

How is the platform connected? wired/wireless, and if its wireless is it on 2.4ghz or 5ghz?

do you get the packet loss/latency issue if you're directly connected to the modem?

Re: packet loss and headaches

thanks for replying, here are my answers

1. docsis 3.1 wireless gateway model CGA4234 (provided by my ISP)

2. firmware is always latest. (i've tried downgrading firmware before, no success.)

3. I play on xbox 99% of the time, and i can tell the packetloss thanks to fortnite's stats.

4. my xbox is hardwired upstairs to the back of my modem (or nighthawk router if im trying to fix the packetloss.)

5.i honestly did not test, ill try setting up my nighthawk, plugging my cord into the docsis, and see if the issue persists.

i will update my post after i have tested (also sorry for a late reply, i gotta manually check when i get a reply.)

The CGA4234 is a modem/router combo device. Are you in a double nat? And by that is your netgear in AP mode?

or the CGA4234 in passthrough/modem only mode?

Re: packet loss and headaches

I believe in the netgear instructions it says to put the modem into bridged mode, so that's what i did, then i ran the yellow cord from the modem to the router itself, power cycled the modem, then if i plugged my pc ethernet into either one, there was no internet, nighthawk genie couldnt find an internet connection at all, even if i plugged the ethernet back into the modem in bridged mode, no internet. Back of the nighthawk, same result. It kept telling me that i either didnt power cycle or have the wire in the wrong place.

So no, im not running double nat, but im about to try i think.

Re: packet loss and headaches

ok so i put the nighthawk in AP mode and now the internet is working while my pc is plugged into the nighthawk. Speedtest shows my download at 100mbps when i pay for 1000mbps. removing the ethernet from the nighthawk to the docsis keeps internet, however im also slowed to 100mbps

Re: packet loss and headaches

check your cable.

Also, check the qos on the modem/router combo device. The netgear in AP mode lets the modem/router handle everything.

Re: packet loss and headaches

cables are all snug as a bug, the modem i was provided with has no qos settings also.

Re: packet loss and headaches

Check to make sure your cables are cat5e, cat6 or greater.

not just that they're seated.

What speed do you get directly off the modem/router?

Re: packet loss and headaches

to be honest i have no clue. My dad set up the wires all around years ago. We just dug through a box of old wires and found an ethernet cord to run through the floor to the basement into my xbox.

Also its weird, because on my pc testing through ethernet on speedtest.net or my isps speedtest yields about the same dl rate (92-95mbps)

however going into xbox's network settings and running a statistics test it says my download is 555mbps with 0% packet loss and 40 ping (plugged into nighthawk) havent tried docsis but maybe my pc's network part doesnt support 1000mbps?

Re: packet loss and headaches

hey i just looked at the wire and it says cat5 not cat5e. Should i probably invest in cat6/higher?

Re: packet loss and headaches

Probably a good idea. Also check the port on the computer to make sure its gigabit

Re: packet loss and headaches

im gonna run speedtests on every port i can, by the way, i bought this cord, i saw there was a video on how to strip them and connect your own connectors (the whole in the floor isnt big enough for those giant connector ends.)

Re: packet loss and headaches

im gonna mark this as the solution because it seems to have fixed my packet loss. Im still at a loss of why my pc is speedtesting at 100, but xbox is saying its well over that so it's probably just my pc's ethernet port that's limited.

I appreciate all the help you've given me, thank you.
