Adding a second nighthawk RAX80 to network as AP with same SSID

I would like to buy and add a second nighthawk RAX80 and wire it into my network to funtion as an access point.

I want to keep one SSID like I have now allowing cleints to hop to the strongest signal.

Is this possible? I have spent 2 hours looking online and seem to find little to no information on it.

How well does does netgear handle hand off?  Same level as Asus and Unifi?

If it doesnt allow multiple APs with the same SSID with hand off I will be putting my router on ebay and moving to asus as I know for a fact that it is possible with their routers.

I do not like having 2 networks or having septerate SSIDs for 2.4ghz and 5ghz as I find that devices will connect to 2.4gh first when arriving to the house and stay connected to that rather than switching to 5ghz.  And then I find that when working outside that the devices try to stay connected to 5ghz for far too long.  I dont want something similar to happen with 2 SSIDs.

If this is possible Netgear should promote this feature more as it is a strong selling point.

Thank you

Re: Adding a second nighthawk RAX80 to network as AP with same SSID

The RAX line of routers aren't mesh routers.

Its Orbi and MK nighthawk line are mesh. Meaning they support the smart roaming protocols that allow more seamless roaming.

You can sure add an access point. And devices might roam fine but they won't be as seamless as a mesh system.

The caveat to that is the mesh extenders (not hardwired). When they're setup in mesh mode, they have smart roaming protocols.

But the downside is they need to be in extender mode and not access point mode so they can't be hardwired in if in extender mode. And if you're needing more than 1, I'd still be recommending a full mesh system.

Netgear has set up a community forum specifically for the NightHawk RAX WiFi 6 Router products. Most of the people who watch that forum are more likely to have experience with NH router products and know how to work it better than those of us who follow this router forum. Might be more likely to find someone who has a solution if the question is posted there:

Please use this link to the main forum product list to review and choose where to make your posts.
