Nighthawk R7450 remote management not working, not opening port

Have a Nighthawk R7450 wifi router, firmware v1.2.0.76...

I can't get remote management to open the designated port on the router...I check the box for remote management, enter the port 35353, for everyone and saved it...when i use the external ip address (not connected to the router's wifi; i.e. remote access thru another network - in this case, both my car and cellphone networks) it times out b/c the port is closed...after the time out, i went to canyouseeme.org on the router's network and checked the port i setup for remote management; 35353...it says it is closed and not open...

I am able to remotely access the router thru the Nighthawk android app...this works fine...i have also opened up ports on the router via the router's interface at 192.168.1.1 for my security sytem's recorder...access to the recorder is fine remotely...so i know port forwarding works...likewise, canyouseeme.org shows the recorder's ports as open...

i would assume the Nighthawk app likely opens a port to work - but i don't know which one...and/or whether you can't directly access the router remotely if you have the app installed?...or i need to use the same port number as the app?...or something else is just plain wrong...

I have searched for the answer to this, to no avail...thanks, in advance...R

       Connected to what?

Does that (unspecified) "the external ip address" match the IP
address of the router's WAN/Internet interface?

ADVANCED > ADVANCED Home : Internet Port : Internet IP Address

       "it"?

_Which_ "the port"?  Are you using "https://" or "http://"?

connected to: Spectrum cable modem via ethernet cat 6 cable...

external ip address: the external WAN ip address - verified with canyouseeme.org...not the 192.168.1.1 internal address...

it times out: the request to the external address/port combo entered into the browser to access the router remotely...

https or http: https...the remote management router screen defaults to https..and i used that, along with the port 35353...

"Spectrum cable modem" is not a useful description of anything

Maker?  Model number?  Is it actually a modem, or is it a modem+router?

Too vague to be useful.  Are you trying to say that the address you
get from canyouseeme.org is a public address, or that the actual
WAN/Internet address of the router matches that address, or what?

        > [...] the remote management router screen defaults to https [...]

Only "https://" should work remotely, not "http://".

If you're actually doing things correctly (which is not clear), and a
time-out is all you can get, then you might try loading a
        different/older firmware version.
