X4S and XR500 on the same network

I have a Netgear Nighthawk X4S AC2600 Smart WiFi Router and a Netgear Nighthawk pro gaming XR500 Gaming Router.

Each is in a house. Between the houses is an Ethernet cable a little over 100 m long. One of the houses is connected to the Internet.

How should the routers be setup?

Does it matter which one is in which house?

In my previous setup, I used the X4S in the house with the Internet connection and a very old Dovado router as Ethernet switch and wireless acces point in the other house. To set that up, I connected the Dovado via one of its LAN ports and left its WAN port unused. I also set the same wireless network name and password for both devices. This was done according to an instruction manual.

All I did now was replace the old Dovado whith the XR500. But it is connected differently. The cable from the house with the Internet connection is plugged into the Internet port (yellow). If you can read this, it sort of works.

  • You do not want two routers functioning in router mode on the same local area network.  That gives you a double NAT configuration.  Read here to see why that is bad:  https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-double-NAT-and-why-is-it-bad

Ideally you would have one of your two devices (X4s or XR500) configured as a router and one as an access point connected via Ethernet cable.  Some where you have a device on the end of your internet connection.  Is it a modem, ONT (Optical Network Terminal), fixed wireless, or ??  It would be helpful to know the brand name and model number from the nameplate.

It is an Optical Network Terminal but I did not find a model number on it. Only a MAC number.

The question is, does the ONT perform any routing function?

Does the ONT have more than one Ethernet output port?
