Can I connect a second router for VPN use dedicated to my Roku only?

Just purchased a CM1100 modem, which I understand to be ethernet port aggregation capable, but I don't really know what this means as I'm pretty novice with anything other than a simple modem-->router setup.

What I'm trying to do is use my old R7000 router to set up a VPN for use streaming via my Roku.

The main router I'm using to access the internet with the devices in our home is a RAX45.

I'm not sure how to do this and have done some research but it isn't entirely clear to me.

Any good resources?

Model: CM1100|Nighthawk Multi-Gig Speed Cable Modem—DOCSIS 3.1, R7000|AC1900 Smart WIFI Router, RAX40|Nighthawk AX4 4-Stream WiFi Router

so go:

modem---->rax---->r7000

with the 3rd party firmware on the r7000.

Re: Can I connect a second router for VPN use dedicated to my Roku only?

Depending on your isp, most ISP's (cox, comcast, spectrum) only support 1 device connected to the CM1100 or CM1200. Wan port aggregation is when the router can aggregate 2 wan ports to support speeds great than gigabit.

The R7000P and RAX40 (from your signature) don't support wan port aggregation.

So you can't have 2x routers directly connected to that modem unless you have one of the lucky few ISPs that support multiple devices (like sparklight).

Were you planning on installing 3rd party firwmare to the r7000P for the vpn or what was your intentention exactly?

Because you could always go

CM1100--->R7000P----->RAX40 (in access point) mode.

That'd allow you to have the r7000P as vpn. not sure of what vpn or their capabilities but some allow you to set specific devices to go through the vpn

Re: Can I connect a second router for VPN use dedicated to my Roku only?

I wanted to set up the R7000 (I don't have the "P" version) exclusively for the VPN and only to connect the Roku to it so we can watch our local baseball team since all streaming services dropped local Fox Sports affiliates. Everything else would connect through the RAX40 (my unit says RAX45 but the 40 is the only "RAX" option that came up - not sure if that matters or not).

Is that what you were asking?

The main issue I'm trying to avoid is when I set up our VPN on the router last time it blocked our kids from accessing things online for school.

I'm not sure of what 3rd party firmware you're using on R7000.

You might have better luck asking on the vpn providers forums on if its better to go

RAX---->R7000

or

R7000--->RAX

I don't have any firmware on it at the moment, but I would plan to use the VPNs firmware I suppose. Sorry, my novice is showing.

Do the two routers have to be connected?

Are you asking if you can use 1 as a repeater/extender?

The RAX doesn't support that mode (or 3rd party vpn's)

The R7000 does with stock firmware but not sure with 3rd party firmware.

I don't believe it would be a repeater or extender the way I'm intending.

RAX40-->typical internet usage in the home: phones, laptops, tablets, ring doorbell, Canary camera, etc. would connect as usual to access wifi throughout the home.

R7000-->for use with the Roku ONLY to access streaming via a VPN. No other devices would access this.
