Limit Device Speed with Nighthawk R6260
As the title says, I'm trying to limit the speed of an individual device. I'm running gigabit internet and one of the people living with me is killing ~500gb of data by themselves. I tried using QoS as several posts suggested to other users, but this only harmed everyone else. With QoS on, everyone was dropped from 900 mbps down to 400. Even if I set everyone to "high" priority and the perpetrator to "low," everyone was equally reduced to 400 mbps. I tried setting everyone as "high" and myself to "low," and again everyone was equally at 400. Disabling QoS returned everyone back to 900, but again, this person is using 50% of our data cap (Cox Communications is evil) by themselves.

Not possible on stock firmware
Might be time for "the talk" with them.
or you could use access control to limit if they can connect.- I've spoken with them about it, but they're blaming it on the pandemic and that they're working from home. Looking at the network activity though, I don't see how Apex Legends and Twitch streaming have anything to do with an office job... Worst case I'll look into another router. The current one does not have any option for parental controls without an additional payment plan.

- Does that mean there is a specific firmware that would enable me to use bandwidth limiting? Or is this something I would need a raspberry pi for?

That's because QoS relies on your router's processor to manage traffic. That just gets in the way.
The general advice from Netgear and others is to turn off QoS if you have Internet above ~250 Mbps.
Also disable anything else that need processor power, such as traffic metering and parental controls.
The R6260 isn't exactly the fastest device around. A pretty basic router.
You don't say of people are on wifi or wired. Wifi is usually slower than wired.
michaelkenward I knew that it was recommended to turn off QoS and only mentioned it so that it others wouldn't suggest it like in some other discussions I've read
As far as network connection, the problem person is using cat7 ethernet. Our wifi isn't a problem since the router only averages 200 mbps down.
What I'm trying to do is intentionally limiting this person's speed without affecting the rest of the people on the network. I just wanted to see if it was at all possible with this router.
microchip8 made it sound like there is non-stock firmware out there that would let me do this, but if not, I was going to buy an Asus router instead since I know those have the option.
I didn't imply there are 3rd party firmwares out there that support that feature. I just said it's not supported by the stock firmware
