RAX Slow Internet Speed on LAN and Wireless

I have a RAX40 router. My Internet speed currently clocks at above 300Mbs whenever the cable modem is connected directly to a computer through an ethernet port. The router seems to be unstable and have intermittent problems; sometimes the internet speed would max out at 6Mbs, but most of the time the devices connected to the router (bother ethernet and wireless ports) can expect a speed hovering at 50Mbs. However, in the past it was constantly at 6Mbs, but after a reset and firmware upgrade, it went back to close to 50Mbs for most of the time.

At first, I thought that there was wan port speed negotiation problem – maybe the wan port of the router was negotiating a 10Mbs speed with the cable modem’s ethernet port. But upon looking at the stats in the routers page (192.168.1.1), it shows that the wan port is set up at 1Gbs when connected to the cable modem.

Below is a pic depicting some of the configuration:

Any input would be appreciated.

What is that cable modem? Make and model?

Nope, no DMZ enabled.

By the way, the command prompt window showing the config (ipconfig /all) of the computer ethernet port when it is connected directly to the cable modem; thus, the public IP address.

The modem that is currently being used is a “ARRIS SURFboard SB6183-RB DOCSIS 3.0 16x4 Gigabit Cable Modem, 1 Gbps Port, 400 Mbps Max Internet Speed”. In the past, the speed limits for that isp account was 50Mbs, but since the beginning of this year it was upgraded to 200Mbs.

Thanks!

Re: RAX Slow Internet Speed on LAN and Wireless

The cable modem is a surfboard, the following: “ARRIS SURFboard SB6183-RB DOCSIS 3.0 16x4 Gigabit Cable Modem, 1 Gbps Port, 400 Mbps Max Internet Speed”. In the past, the speed limits for that ISP account was 50Mbs, but since the beginning of this year it was upgraded to 200Mbs.

Also, the nodes connected to the router have a connection that often is sub-par, slow, sometimes with lots of latency. In some occasion, pinging a public IP address from ones of the nodes in my LAN results in 10% loss. For example, "ping netzero.com -n 25" or "ping google.com -n 25" would from time to time result in a 10% or 5% loss, other times it would result in 0% loss.

Another issue is that after doing some speed tests between two nodes within my LAN (using iperf3), I noted that the speed seems be capped at 48Mbs -- I would expect it to much faster than that.

That router seems to be having a myriad of issues, which makes me think that it simply is too dysfunctional and thus needs to be replaced.
