I found the solution for this problem.

You have to use a web browser to log into you equipment and it will promt you to change password using admni as user name.  Once you do this you can now use the app on ios and android using admin.

Good Luck!

I was able to when i first installed the app and setup my equipment.  It alos makes no sense because there is no way for me to type in my user name or use admin to login.  the  app is TOTALLY useless.

No, not the device username. Please note there are two different logins: The Netgear account for the App cloud access where you can input the username and the password (and which is stored on the App once entered usually), just like the local device (admin) password if protected by eg. the fingerprint authentication.

Where the local admin login is required, only the local admin password is required - the username admin is always greyed out.

i'm a little bit confused why there is no way (anymore - App version 2.8.0.1395 on Android?) to change the local device (admin) password using the top left "Cloud" Menu -> Settings -> Router Settings.
