So the setup was horrible but I now know that firmware update is required BEFORE swap to AP mode.
Can also live with the horribly painful sequence of 43 network resets as each parameter configured.
But the upload speed is horrible. I only get about 20-30MB/S up and 20-40MB/S down for SMB traffic to local NAS ( with 2000+ mbit for both client and backhaul). Old AC AP managed 50-60MB/s in each direction so I'm about to give up on sxk50 but would still like table top wifi 6 with VLAN support.
Seems CPU hits ~ 60% utilization with 3MB TV stream and 99% when I try upload, mostly IRQ/SIRQ. Not sure if problem is horrible SW not using NSS cores or backhaul flooded with retransmits but it seems CPU, WLAN and software are mismatched.
Does the SXK80 really have an IPQ8074 and if so can the quad core CPU handle upload speeds more comparable to 80mhz AC performance ?
Can I bypass SXR completely with wired backhaul directly to managed switch ? Seems others have struggled with this e.g. reports of "only unmanaged switch works" and "satellite disconnects when connected to vlan != 1".

Beta FW V4.3.0.139 is three times faster than 122 FW for SXR50 !!
Iperf is a bit flaky relative to the SMB traffic I care about but large transfer multi-thread is close. This is also 3X improvement, old firmware struggled to get 200Mbits connected to router.
iperf-3.1.3-win64>iperf3.exe -p 5501 -l 1M -P 2 -c 192.168.2.12
[ 6] 0.00-10.00 sec 369 MBytes 310 Mbits/sec receiver
[SUM] 0.00-10.00 sec 780 MBytes 654 Mbits/sec sender
[SUM] 0.00-10.00 sec 780 MBytes 654 Mbits/sec receiver
I actually see 60-75MB/S because wifi is of course kind of random depending on neighbors etc and I have about 30Mbit/s background traffic on other band. My baseline old AP result was 40-70MB with latter same room only so this FW changed SXR50 from half my current speed to almost double for client connected to satellite 30 feet from router.
This has saved an Orbi from the trash bin.
THANK YOU.

Let's stick on a single thread https://community.netgear.com/t5/Orbi-Pro-WiFi-for-Small-Business/How-to-optimize-single-client-tran... Would be great a moderator closing this thread.

we have new and early qualified beta firmware to improve overall performance. We target to release in mid of Oct. Please have a try to see if improved.

Re: Is orbi pro sxk80 any better than sxk50 in AP mode ?
Oh that's great I will try it out.
I have noticed that I can improve throughput by a few MBytes/s if I correct the IRQ smp mapping to keep wifi and ethernet on separate cores and kill a few useless daemons.( upnp for instance is useless in AP mode ). Makes CPU max at about 95% instead of 100% but still isn't quite right -- obviously I don't fully understand which IRQ's are which.
Based on older atheros devices I suspect making the ebroute default "drop" ( so traffic goes through nss ) might help too but was not confident enough to try.
Obviously none of that acceptable for production AP was trying to figure out if better FW was possible, fantastic to see it so fast.

Re: Is orbi pro sxk80 any better than sxk50 in AP mode ?
Sorry moderator please delete my last response I was too excited about new FW and didn't think. It could be quite misleading for other readers since idle time is bad way to measure throughput -- 51% could be worst case.
