RBS40 firmware V2.2.1.210 failed -- what next?

Early this year I added an Orbi Mini RBS40 satellite to my existing RBR50 + RBS50 network.
I was recently logged into .1.1 as admin and noticed that a firmware upgrade was available. I clicked the upgrade all button. Was that a mistake?
The RBR50 and RBS50 were updated to V2.2.1.210, however the RBS40 is still at V1.8.0.4.
I checked NetGear and found that V2.2.1.210 is available for the RBS40 at https://kb.netgear.com/000060274/RBR40-RBS40-Firmware-Version-2-2-1-210 so I downloaded the zip file and unpacked it.
I logged directly into the RBS40 and attempted to upload RBS40-V2.2.1.210.img but I get the message “Please select correct configuration file.”
I powered down then rebooted the RBS40, still get the same error.
I tried to factory reset the RBS40 but it seemed not to work as the factory admin password is not accepted and my admin password still works.
Some searching in this community leads me to a couple of approaches to similar problems. One is to downgrade the RBR then upgrade the RBS then upgrade the RBR. The other is to tftp the firmware image onto the RBS40.
I’m wondering whether either/both of these workarounds would apply to my situation. And which to try first. I'm leaning towards tftp.
I would welcome suggestions. Thanks.

The RBS40 should have been updated before you updated to v210?
THe RBS needs to be update then it should reconnect. Try installing a middle of the road version on the RBS, try v2.1.1.12. If you can get this installed, then try v210 on the RBS. I ran in to this same situation that you can't go from OLD FW to New FW. Theres a middle of the road FW that has to be installed first.

Re: RBS40 firmware V2.2.1.210 failed -- what next?
Furrye38 had the right idea. I had to install v1.1.1.6 then 2.0.0.56 then 2.2.1.210
