Connecting ORBI RBK30 to BT Smart Hub 2

I have taken delivery today of my ORBI router and satellite. It is now connected and working moderately well but I have some problems. I have connected the supplied Ethernet cable between an Ethernet port on the BT hub and an Ethernet port on the ORBI. Trying to connect to the Internet port on the ORBI does not work.

The satellite shows a white light and the NAS drive connected to it is accessible from my desktop computer as I can see the files and change folder names.

However, the ORBI router shows a steady magenta light and when I look in the ORBI app it is not able to connect to the router.

In the Network Map section of the app Internet and Router have green arrows below it, and the Satellite has an orange wifi icon.

WiFi signal strength is -22dBm and signal strength 100%. Everything in WiFi Analytics looks good.

Internet speed is 170Mb/s download and 32Mb/s upload.

I went into Traffic Meter and tried to enable it but saw the message 'Something went wrong, please try again', but trying again does not work.

In Your Products it shows only the RBR350 which it says is disconnected, and the only option it gives is to disconnect this device, which I do not want to do..

I also saw a message at one time that the ORBI may be in Bridge mode, but I have tried logging in to the router using orbilogin-net.net but it does not accept the username and password I set up, and I am pretty sure that I have remembered them correctly.

I have also found a problem that when I tried to register the product it is apparently already registered to someone else, but the package was unopened when I received it today.

I do hope that someone can help.

Sorry, this was originally posted in a Nighthawk forum by mistake.

The BT Smart Hub 2 is a (pile of rubbish) modem/router.

It does not support modem/only (bridge) mode.

So you are adding one router after another. That's a recipe for chaos.

The first thing to do, while you work put how to dump BT's disaster area, is to put the RBK30 into access point mode.

Visit the support pages:

Support | NETGEAR

Feed in your model number and check the documentation for your hardware.

Read the section Use the router as a WiFi access point.

Then read this:

Disabled Features on the Router when set to AP Mode | Answer | NETGEAR Support

If they cause you problems, come back for ways to consign the BT Hub to the recycling bin.

Thanks for replying Michael.

I will have a closer look tomorrow or Monday when I have more time.

Re: Connecting ORBI RBK30 to BT Smart Hub 2

so your bt hub already has a router built into it. It causes a doubel nat

A double nat happens when you cascade more than 1 router.
https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT
Fixes? There’s 3 options but only use 1.
1. Put the modem/gateway in modem only/pass through mode. This disables its routing functions. (bt hubs struggle with this mode for some reason)
2. Leave the modem/gateway in router mode but put the Netgears IP address into its DMZ. This forwards the data to the netgear. You can either leave the modem/gateway’s wireless enabled or disabled. Just make sure its using a different wifi channel to prevent interference
3. Put the Netgear into access point mode. This disables its routing functions. Wifi/ethernet still works but it does disable some features.

In terms  of your registration, its something you'd need to contact customer support about. Nothing on the community we can do to help.

Re: Connecting ORBI RBK30 to BT Smart Hub 2

Thank you plemans, I tried option 2 and with some more experimentation I now have the router working correctly and the Orbi app shows all of the devices connected to the network. My only problem now is that I cannot access either of my NAS drives from Windows. I think I will make a new post for this.
