ReadyNAS and video transcoding. Cannot play videos with Plex

Question

Got my 102 today.&nbsp;&nbsp; No problems with the 102 in general.&nbsp;I Have a ReadyNAS Duo V1.&nbsp;&nbsp; The 102 is about the same except for apps and Readycloud.&nbsp;I can connect with readycloud, no problem.&nbsp;I can stream audio, no problem.&nbsp;But I cannot stream any video.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; It says my CPU is not powerful enough.&nbsp;&nbsp; I assumed you could set up PLEX so no transcoding would be done.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; I have videos that should make it over the internet to phone ok.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; But PLEX seems to insist on transcode, then says it can't.&nbsp;I am NOT happy with this.&nbsp;&nbsp; Is there ANY way to stream video to a phone with or without Plex.&nbsp;&nbsp; Is there a certain video bit rate and such that PLEX would be happy with????&nbsp;&nbsp; I know my deceased Pogoplug had a particular video format it liked.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Not to mention, the updating of any library takes FOREVER.&nbsp; I just use music via folders.&nbsp;&nbsp; Plex forces me to use it's library structure most of the time.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; You can list music by folder but the updating is just a deal breaker.&nbsp;Any help would be appreciated.&nbsp;This device is just to pricey and limited for function vs price.

I agree the library updates are very slow (they are also very slow on a PC btw).

You can try ReadyDLNA combined with ReadyCloud. &nbsp;That also won't transcode.

Are you playing the videos using the plex app or the plex web page? &nbsp;I've found the web page is more limited (since it can only use the codecs that are supported by the browser).

If you are using plex with other DLNA clients - the client tells the server what it can handle. &nbsp;If the media isn't on the client's list, then you are basically stuck. Converting media off-line is the only option.

The RN20x and RN21x are much better for plex.

I am try to get the 102 with Plex to stream video to my cellphone 3g. The cellphone works with video when the WIFI is turned on in the phone. With no transcoding.

I can transcode my videos manually on my PC, but I don't know what plex likes.

The videos work fine when I use my PC as a Plex server.

People have mentioned the 102 does not have the horsepower to transcode video. I did more research, the level of ReadyNAS that would probably do video is just too expensive for my use and wallet.

But it would be nice if there was some way to link a cellphone to the 102 so I could stream audio and video directly. One other option is to just download the video files with readycloud.

mp4 (H.264 video and aac audio) works w/o transcoding.

I have tried some mp4 files and they did not work.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; BUT.&nbsp;&nbsp; Maybe I will try to create some again.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Would bitrate make a difference?&nbsp; I dont care about super high quality when I stream.&nbsp;&nbsp; I was thinking 320 kbps as tolerable.&nbsp;&nbsp; Need to experiment I guess.&nbsp;&nbsp; I need to get a new dvd ripper too, I guess.&nbsp;&nbsp; Streaming video is nice when you are stuck in a hospital with a laptop or tablet (with wifi) and you have the room's 12" tv two miles from your bed, LOL.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I am disappointed about the processing power of the 102.&nbsp;&nbsp; It has not improved much over my ReadyNAS Duo (I upgraded the memory for that I think).&nbsp;&nbsp; But, for the price, the 102 is a SOLID unit.&nbsp;&nbsp; I have the Duo in RAID (2x1TB).&nbsp;&nbsp; The 102 is a single 2TB now.&nbsp;I copied my music collection of about 300GB of music to the 102.&nbsp;&nbsp; Some are high resolution (24bit 96khz) FLAC files.&nbsp;&nbsp; These high resolution files seem to stream OK, to my surprise.&nbsp;&nbsp; I discovered another streaming app, Subsonic, and will try that out too when the library creation is completed on the 102 with Plex..... I expect this creation to take many days.&nbsp;&nbsp; I think it is because Plex goes to the internet for each track, searching for info on it.&nbsp;&nbsp; I wish I could stop it from doing this.

hi ShadowJack,&nbsp;i assume you use an android phone with the plex app to stream your videos?The message you see 'your nas is not good enough for transcoding' i only see when using the plex.tv site. Do you agree? So using the plex app on your phone should work well. And it does look like that, if i understood correctly.One bottleneck could be your internet connection. The downstream usually differs from upstream. So, if you dont login within your local network you wont get the speed you like to see. That could be a problem, too. After all, you maybe could try to use a vpn access to your local network avoiding the plex.tv way.&nbsp;Regards.
