Understanding snapshots
I am just getting my head around snapshots in OS6, very very cool.
I am wondering what the strategy is for controlling the number (or size) of the snapshots? It seems like the only option is "Unlimited". So, what's the overall approach to keeping this from consuming all your available diskspace?

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThere's some useful information here: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detai ... erating-my
- ScottChapmanApprenticeGot it, so basically "Smart Management" will do some pruning for me:
Hourly snapshots are kept for 48 hours.
Daily snapshots are kept for four weeks.
Weekly snapshots are kept for eight weeks.
Monthly snapshots are kept indefinitely. - Marto731AspirantHi,
ReadyNAS Smart Snapshot Management (Snapshot Retention Times) is detailed at this link.

Article written January 2014 Regards, Marto - mh5blAspirantI do not see where you would set monthly snapshots. Only have hourly Daily and weekly in the dropdown list
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIf you set weekly snapshots it will keep weekly snapshots for eight weeks and from the weekly snapshots it will keep one snapshot a month indefinitely. As described in the link Marto73 gave above.
- mh5blAspirantSo does the mean if you set a daily snapshot it will still keep one snapshot every monthly ?
I did read it but it does not make it very clear. Thanks - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYes.
It just doesn't make sense to keep say 365 snapshots per year. The NAS removes some of the older snapshots which helps allow the snapshot history to extend further into the past than would otherwise be possible. - mh5blAspirantSo if you have the space on the unit it would be best to keep Hourly or Daily snapshot ? as this would still give you Weekly, Monthly and Yearly snapshot
- vandermerweMasterYes, probably not hourly if you are a home user.
Only monthly snapshots are kept indefinitely as has been pointed out before.
