Strict NAT Type, Unable to Change

Strict NAT Type, Unable to Change

Okay, first and foremost let me just say I am by no means an expert or even well informed on any of this type of stuff. This is the first time I've ever needed to go really into the settings of a router ever. It could be a very simple fix that I stupidly missed or it could be the complete opposite, point is I'm not even going to act like I know what I'm doing.

To understand what got me here:
I'd moved up to college and had to get my own router. (had a Netgear WNR2000v5 laying around, decided to take it) which for the most part has actually worked fine, I'd only figured out there being a strict NAT type when I tried to join a couple friends in a game through cross platform on Xbox from my Laptop (MSI GS65 Stealth Thin, Windows 10). After repetitive attempts, restarting, etc... I'd decided to look into it further. This is when is when I realized I have a strict NAT type through the Xbox Companion app.
Although this appears to be limited to my laptop, as for my roommates (on the same router) just on their Xbox consoles actually read an open NAT type, so I would like to assume the problem lies in something with Windows but I'm not going to rule it out.

Regardless I don't know the steps I need to take to find a way around this. I've already tried accessing my routers settings through Netgear Genie through the browser but routerlogin.net redirects to the Netgear site and the default IP addresses timeout. But that's because its a private IP and starts with a 10. instead of a 192. But even my actual IP times out. it shows that there's successful pings but nothing really happens after that; this too will also timeout when I try to visit.

Accessing Netgear Genie through app works but it lacks the advanced tab  to access the other settings such as port forwarding which is the main thing I was trying to do

As for this being a Windows thing, there is most definitely a lot I haven't tried either because I don't know what to do, or I don't know where to find it, Ive spent hours browsing different forums for similar situations; found a few, looked into them and tried some things, but to no avail Ive got no leads. I remain where id started.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Strict NAT Type, Unable to Change

What Firmware version is currently loaded?
What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?

If your ISP Modem already has a built in router and wifi. This would be a double NAT (two router) condition which isn't recommended. This would be a double NAT condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT

Couple of options,
1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the NG router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the NG router gets from the modem. https://kb.netgear.com/25891/DMZ-on-NETGEAR-routers

3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the NG router to the modem, LAN to LAN configure AP mode on the NG router.

Re: Strict NAT Type, Unable to Change

The Firmware Version of the NG Router is 1.0.0.68

Information regarding the mfr and model # of the college is undisclosed, all we really have is just an ethernet plug on the wall of the dorm which is how my routers hooked up. It actually only reads as a Strict NAT though instead of a double NAT. Its worth noting that I share the router with my roommates, they didn't bring their own and they still read as an Open NAT type.

Option 1 - Seems off the table as the colleges system remains undisclosed

Option 2 & 3 - are both locked behind the advanced tab  which I do not have access to as the Genie app (not new enough to be supported by Nighthawk) doesn't have it, and I can't login to my router over browser, it instead times out.

Re: Strict NAT Type, Unable to Change

There is probably a NAT router or two upstream You'll not be able to get a open nat condition with having multiple routers online. You'll need to get with home ever controls the undisclosed router system and ask for there help there.

Good Luck.
