Re: how to update firmware

Thank you but I think I am too old and stoopid to even be asking for help.

Re: how to update firmware

What NG product are you needing help on?

Is this a router, modem? Picture display?

There are gentlemen in this forum that are around 20 years my senior. 😉

Re: how to update firmware

Its a router model R6250 and it is out of warranty.

I don't often use the old lady card but technology scares me.

Re: how to update firmware

Here's a written guide on doing it manually:

https://kb.netgear.com/23960/How-do-I-manually-update-the-firmware-on-my-NETGEAR-router

and then a video guide at the bottom of this KB article:

https://kb.netgear.com/23442/How-do-I-update-the-firmware-on-my-NETGEAR-router-with-a-web-browser

Do you know what firmware version you're on? A lot of devices automatically update.

Also, is there a reason you think you need to update? Just checking if you're having a problem or what's going on exactly.

Re: how to update firmware

I don't even know what firmware is; I just picked up the word somewhere.

My WIFI (or is it internet) connection seems to come and go.

Spectrum said I needed a new router but I'm not so sure.

When I first try to get online I get "there is no internet connection" but then within 10 or 15 seconds there it is.

Maybe I'm just fine the way it is.

Did they try to sell you one?

The R6250 is a perfectly adequate router that meets most needs.

In between your R6250 and the outside world (Internet) there is usually some sort of box. Often it plugs into the phone line.

That's the modem. Before your router can connect you to the wifi, it has to connect through the modem to the Internet.

If you look at the Internet LED on the R6250 router. (Second from the left.) Look at that LED while you sit there waiting to get on line. It should be green. If it is red, it says that your router is connecting to the Inter net.

First, though, what says "there is no internet connection"?

Is it everything that tries to go on line, or just one wifi thing?

Wifi is a two way thing. The client also has to behave. It may throw up odd messages even when the router is behaving perfectly.

So fixing these things is down to working out where the problem is. Modem, router and wifi client, all need to play nicely.
