A7000 USB Adaptor Gets Lower Than Expected UL and DL MBPS in 5GHZ Range

According to the product description "This AC1900 USB 3.0 adapter wirelessly connects your laptop or desktop computer with WiFi speeds up to 1.9Gbps." However, after increasing my Hyperoptic broadband to 750mbps I can only hit around 270mbps download and 320mbps upload speeds from my PC in the 5ghz range (with the router about 10 feet away in line of sight) whereas my phone in the same range is able to hit 500mbps+. Is anyone aware of any issues of this type? Anything which could be limiting the A7000?

Based on what you've said, it seems clear you feel the issue is separate to the adaptor itself as other users can pull much higher numbers on this device.

Not really. I am just suggesting that networks are complicated issues and that it can take some effort to track down issues. And, of course, you have to cut through the fig of marketing when it comes to talk of speeds.

A good way to test a USB adapter is to try it in different devices and on different wifi sources.

Of course, if you have real problems with speeds on your network, the obvious answer is to replace wifi with a wired connection. Something like Powerline Ethernet  might be an improvement.

  • I should say that I ran through the troubleshooting guide here: https://kb.netgear.com/24903/NETGEAR-USB-wireless-adapter-is-not-achieving-desired-speed-or-range

Adjust the location of the adapter relative to the router.
My phone hits much higher numbers from the same position.

    Use a NETGEAR wireless extender
    .
N/A given how close the router is and that it's LOS.

Check for the latest updates and drivers
    .
The latest driver seems to be the one from 2017 (25/12/2017) and that's what's installed.

Check the wireless security encryption of your router
    .
    WPA2 and again...the phone.

    Get rid of obstacles
    .
    N/A.

Use Windows to increase the power that is being sent to your wireless adapter
    .
    I don't have a Transmit Power option.

Adjust the adapter with a USB extension.

    N/A
