Creating multiple shares

Hi,
This may be a really simple question, but I am struggling to create 2 shares with separate access rights. I want 1 share which is totally open, so no account restriction, and the second which is user controlled.

I have setup the 'open share' and retained public access and within CIFS have Allowed 'guest' access.
For the secure share, I have deselected public access, and deselected 'guest' access . I have setup 2 separate accounts with different group names as I want 1 account to have read/write access to this share and the other to have just read only.

Wilst I can get to the secure share and access it correctly (i.e correct control depending upon which user account I use), I cannot seem to be able to access the 'open share' without entering a user/pwd. I have tried all combinations I can think to create the share, but on each occasion it still prompts for an id/pwd before allowing access.

I assume there must be a way of having 1 share totally open and the other user controlled??

I am running Windows7 on a desktop and laptop, and wanted each device to have the 2 separate network connections

Hope someone can assist

Many thanks

  • The reason why you are being promted for the UN and PW on the open share it is because you are login as a different user and not as guest. I would recommend that you follow the permission configuration below for the open share:

    Configuring Advance CIFS Permissions:
    1. Go to Share listings
    2. Click Cifs icon of the specific share name
    3. Scroll down and put a check on "Automatically set permissions on new files and folders" under Advance CIFS Permissions.

The steps below will basically make the exsisting shares have a wide open permission. "drxwrxwrxw"

    Configuring Advance Options:
    1. Go to Share listings
    2. Click Cifs icon of the specific share name
    3. Go to Advance Options tab
    4. Share folder owner: (type the share name)
    5. Share folder group: (nogroup)
    6. Put a check on "Set ownership and permission for existing files and folders in this share to the above settings" and click Apply.

    P.S.
After you put a click on the Apply button the check will disappear inside the check box, it's normal because it's an action box.
