Error connecting to. Win 7 starter issues ?
Is there a bug in the front view software?
There are so many threads with people being unable to get the test connection to work and just being left wih error connecting to. Its obviously not just me.
Can we have some guidance please.
I've selected
remote windows/ nas tiemstamp
host = name of the computer with no slashes or anything like that
path = d as I want to back upthe entire d: drive
login and password as per login to the machine.
Browse option never light up

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredTry the IP address (have you assigned the PC a static one?) rather than the hostname. Also have you shared the d drive on your computer with sharename d?
ewok is the Jedi who appears to be a backup expert. The Jedi can't respond to everything we users ask and they are not official support. The Jedi, I believe are the senior engineers of the ReadyNas so they know it better than anyone.
You can contact technical support for help (see link in my sig) and post the case number in this thread too if you like. - ewokNETGEAR ExpertUsually this means the remote side is not setup correctly. Did you try connecting to the share using a Windows PC using the information your provided to the backup?
- RidcullyAspirantI don't have a second pc to check the access but in the settings I have switched off the password requirement for sharing.
can't find the option in Win 7 starter to fix the ip address. Can anyone guide me please - ewokNETGEAR ExpertYou don't really need to set it to static for testing, just use the current IP address of the computer.
- RidcullyAspirantyep tried that. Still getting the same messages. IS it the format I am using
host = ip address with no \ or /
share = "d" which is the share name of the d drive
Its the fact that the browse doesn't work that is confusing me, as sure this should make it easy to navigate to the available shares. - ewokNETGEAR ExpertYour format looks correct as long as a PC can successfully connect to the d share. The browse button was intended to work on local shares only.
- RidcullyAspirantBeen away from this for a while but having another attempt
Work group for PC, Netbook and Duo set the same
PC (Xp) can see the drive on the netbook (Win 7 starter) when I use "My network places
Still getting the same "error connecting message" when trying to create a backup for the netbook drive. Is it something to do with "homegroup" as it says its not connected to a homegroup. Not entirely sure what the difference is between a homegroup and a workgroup to be honest - ewokNETGEAR ExpertIs the PC able to open up the share on the netbook using the info provided to the backup job?
Have you tried running the backup job and seeing what error message it gives you? - RidcullyAspirantWhat setting should I be looking for on the windows 7 install.
I've tried with a pc running xp home and everything works fine. But he netobbok on win 7 starter isn't found. Everything has the same workgroup but I keep coming across the term homegroup and the fact that starter edition is limited on this. Is this the problem and how do fix it.
The netbook d drive does appear in the My network places of the xp machine. Is there another way to check it - ewokNETGEAR ExpertTry running the backup job and see what error message it gives you.
