Multiple instances of readydlna

Hi,

My nas contains media for both me and my kids.
All this media is now included in a simple DLNA tree.

However, some media is not really child friendly.... (think horror here...... not pron).
I would like to be able to configure 2 DLNA servers..... say the parent one containing all media for the adults in the house, and
one child-friendly one with all that media....

Browsing the respective dlna servers would also be easier because there is less media to go through..

Is this possible with minidlna ?
Can someone create a additional plugin for minidlna which runs another server with a additional config file.. ?

I would not really like it to install yet another dlna server on top.... minidlna suits my purposes pretty will...

Fred

  • I'm sort of glad to see I'm not the only one having this issue. :)

Like you, my ReadyNAS contains some media that's safe to stream with full access and some that I want to have a bit of access control on. But I can't find a reasonable way to do that. I currently have one share with music and "safe" video, and another share with R-rated video - with the former being set to full read and write access and the latter having stricter user policies. The all-access share is streamed with ReadyDLNA. But I can not find a reasonable way to stream the second share over DLNA.

If ReadyDLNA could run two instances, I could turn one of them on and off as needed. That's slightly more hazzle than I would prefer, but I can live with it. But I can't even do that - ReadyDLNA will only stream one share at the time.

(I also think it's a bit odd that the DLNA is so open. Game consoles and TV decoders have provisions for access control - so it's not like the concept is unknown to manufacturers.)
  • Hi Frosty,

I have submitted a patch to minidlna implementing the possibility of running multiple instances of minidlna (UUID in config needs to be specified to create a unique server).
Multiple instance support will probably not implemented in the netgear addon of minidlna, but multiple instances could be started using something like:

    /usr/sbin/minidlna -f /path/minidlna.conf1 -p /tmp/conf1.pid
    /usr/sbin/minidlna -f /path/minidlna.conf2 -p /tmp/conf2.pid

From my point of view this would be sufficient for my immediate needs.

    Keep your fingers crossed :-)
