RN214 NAS backup - best external device to use
I just upgraded the hard drives in my RN214 NAS, and I want to start using the old drives to back up the NAS.
I upgraded from 6TB drives to 8TB drives - one of the 6TB was going bad. I have just over 10TB of used space, and now three 6TB drives. I plan on using two of these drives for the computer backups and other frequently changed folders being stored on the NAS (alternating drives being used), and the third drive for everything else.
Could I please get some recommendations for the fastest external enclosures to use. I'm assuming that the eSata interface would be preferred over the USB3 interface.
Other recommendations for my planned backup plan - inexpensively?
Thanks!

FWIW, when SmallNetworkBuilder reviewed the RN214, they found that USB 3 transfer speeds were actually slightly faster than eSATA on the RN21x plaforms.
Personally I'd go with USB 3. You'd be able to more easily connect them to a PC if you need to access the backup if the NAS chassis fails.
I'd also use NTFS format. While there are advantages to using a native linux format, IMO the ability to easily read the backups on a Windows or Mac PC is more important.
Get an enclosure that allows you to power the drives directly (not relying on the power supplied on the USB interface).

Unless you have a eSATA port on your PC, go with USB. One point of backup is being able to access it if the NAS itself fails, so you'll need to plug it into the computer directly. That's also a reason to use NTFS instead of NFS for the drive format.
