RN314 - Cannot create volume on two new disks

Hi all,

I am trying to install two disks on my RN314 NAS and for some reason I cannot create a new volume.

The two disks are coming from an old ReadyNAS Duo v2. There are already two disks on the RN314.

This is what happened...

I have removed the two new disks from the Duo and plugged them into the RN314. Disks got recognized, displayed in red and got the indication to remove the unused volumes to be able to use the disks 3 and 4. I removed the volume, then I got the same error message but this time only for disk 3. Did it again, both disks went black, but when I select them the button "Create Volume" is disabled.

So I removed the disks 1 and 2, made a factory default, created a new volume and switched off. Reinstalled all disks, and everything went back to the previous situation: old volume fine, but new disks cannot be added.

What am I doing wrong here?

Could it be because the original drives were created in raid 5? (don't ask me why, I never choose that... that is also coming from a factory default...)

Thanks!

  • Hi Jenn,

well, it is difficult to define it as a "solution", since it did not solve anything. It is more an partial explanation of what happened.

Apparently the reason why the NAS did not allowed me to create a new volume on the two new disks is because it automatically set the first volume as RAID 5. I don't know why, I don't know how, but when I plugged the drives coming from the old NAS it changed the configuration of the first two.

The result is that I have a single volume which includes the space available from both drives.

I left it configured in that way, for my needs it is fine also like this.

OS-6 generally won't destroy disk contents without confirmation.  Select each of the 1 TB disks on the volume tab and then click on "format".

Then they should be added to the array.

Hi Stephen, I tried with both disks, but I cannot create a new volume... I will try again...

--edit: I confirm, tried again to format both disks, but the new volume button is still disabled.

Ok, this is what happened. For some reason I don't understand, the NAS decided to create a unique volume with the 500GB+1TB drives. Once it finished the resync operation, it merged the two drives together and that was why it was not allowing me to create a second volume on the two new disks.

I am pretty sure that this was not the configuration I set with the first two drives... but anyway it is fine, I can keep it in this way.
