ReadyNAS 104 Disks thrashing
I have a ReadyNAS 104 at home and I often only access it in the evenings. Normally the unit has gone into standby mode and there is no disk activity. Almost every time I go to use my PC the disks are...

I wouldn't clear the logs.
Have you looked in systemd-journal.log? I am wondering if there are leafp2p errors in there.

Hi
Amazingly, today the disks have now quietened down and gone back to normal.
I have checked this log and there are many many errors such as these when the disks were thrashing
- Nov 12 16:46:29 NRN1 minidlnad[29030]: monitor_inotify.c:131: error: inotify_add_watch(/data/Music/snapshot/c_2023_01_07__00_00_25/Led Zeppelin) [No such file or directory]
- Nov 10 00:56:40 NRN1 minidlnad[15566]: [mpeg2video @ 0xb5486cc0] Invalid frame dimensions 0x0.
Note the old date on the snapshot file.
There are also many errors related to sending alerts to my yahoo.co.uk address. I have put in the correct address and it comes back with an error when you try to send a test message. I still cannot get this to work
The from address in the advanced section is the same as my email address. So I changed this to a different address and it still does not work.
Thanks for your help.

It should be.
My own system uses smtp.mail.yahoo.com for the SMTP server, with the SMTP port set to 465. Use TLS is also set.
Note you do need to go into the security page on your yahoo account, and generate an app password for your readynas. then use that password in your ReadyNAS email settings.

Thjis one is because one or your media files is corrupted, so the DLNA scanner isn't able to get the metadata from that file. upnp-av.log might have more information.

If you are running the "Smart" snapshots, I suggest switching to "Custom" and set a specific retention period.
You might also want to go into the music folder in the web ui, and manually delete old snapshots that you see.

Hi
Thanks for all your help.
I resolved the alert message sending by following your instructions and creating an app password. Thank you.
I still don't understand why reference was made to a 2023 snapshot that does not exist a few days ago. I browsed into the snapshots and there is a snapshot for that date but the time appended to the directory name is different so that is why it does not exist. At that point in time these snapshots are monthly.
I am using Smart snapshots, but it suits me fine.
With respect to the video error, you are correct that upnp-av.log contains errors, but nowhere does it specify the filename that is causing the issue.
The good news is that everything has quietened down and is back to normal. The logs do not show any of the previously noted errors.
Thank you for your help.

My issue with them is that the monthly snapshots are never deleted. Over time the storage used by the snapshots can really add up.
So I always recommend shifting to custom, and setting a retention limit. I also use the setting to only make snapshots when the main share changes, which keeps the clutter down.

Do you have "allow snapshot access" checked? That would explain why the DLNA server is able to access the snapshots.
One side effect of enabling that setting is that it also makes the contents of the snapshots writable. Which I think was another mis-step on Netgear's part.
So I recommend keeping that setting off (maybe turning it on temporarily as needed). The "restore previous versions" feature in Windows works with the setting off. And of course you can browse the snapshots from the web ui.
