Reading background material it looks as if I could enable smbv1 in windows features but that looks awfully insecure to me.
But you are prepared to run ftp with no encryption? The security risks are basically the same.

Both command line ftp and filezilla with basic ftp protocol fail with password. I am supplying admin and admin password but nbg. Both can see the ftp server on netgear but not access the files. If possible could you give me the step by step command for inbuilt ftp as I havent used this for years (YEARS!) so may be specifying the password field incorrectly.
If you are still using netgear1 as the admin password, then maybe try changing it.
FTP settings in the standard file protocols page in Frontview should have the authentication mode set to "user". I've always set "allow upload resumes" to Enabled. Port and Passive port defaults are fine if you are accessing on a local network. Masquerading should be off ( I think it will show the NAS hostname in that field).
With FileZilla, you might try opening the site manager, and creating a site for the NAS. Use it's IP address as the host, set encyption to "only use plain FTP".
Logon type should be normal. You can use admin for the User, and enter the NAS admin password in the password field.
Then select the site using the pulldown in the upper left of the FileZilla page (right under "File"), and see if that connects.

The very first thing I did in setup was to change the admin password to a 12 char alternative!
Yes you are right, ftp without encryption is risky but only while using it and I can isolate from outside at the router, while changing win10 to smb1 would involve enabling and disabling a feature affecting the whole of the network.
I will have a go at tweaking ftp tomorrow.
Thanks for your expert participation in this exercise.

Success - albeit limited.
I changed the frontview ftp protocols as advised and logged onto the server from a remote laptop with both standard cmd (admin) ftp and Filezilla. ftp failed at mput presumably for protocol reasons but filezilla worked both ways. However it only worked because, fortuitously, I was using a very old version installed on the laptop a long time ago. When I downloaded a current version of Filezilla onto another PC it failed with protocol errors.
Thus I can ftp the backup I want using the old filezilla, maintain the shares with Internet Explorer until Microsoft kill it altogether (July apparently) and restore a directory from the NAS at will.
One outstanding query. Using frontview in shares how do you download more than one file at a time? If you select it and double click you can open, save or print but only one file. Pretty restrrictive!
A fascinating exercise and many thanks to SteephenB acting as a true guru.

Odd - normal insecure FTP should work, the protocol for it hasn't changed in a very long time. But current FileZilla is likely defaulting to FTPS, which would likely fail because the NAS doesn't support TLS 1.2.
If you are using quick connect in FileZilla, then I suggest using the site manager, so you can explicitly manage the settings more easily.

Not sure if you can.
While I do have two 4.1.x systems still in service, they are just used as secondary backups. I've modified virtual.conf so I can access Frontview with HTTP. All file sharing protocols are turned off, they just power up on schedule (once a week in my case), and back up some shares in my main NAS using rsync backup jobs.

Me too. I never programmed the PDP-8 or PDP-11. But I did spend some time programming a PDP-1, and various other minicomputers later on.

Grin. PDP8 in FOCAL via TTY terminal and FORTRAN IV via EBCDIC punched cards on some IBM to which I had no direct access. But I'm more a hardware guy.

I am possibly one of the few remaining RSTS/E specialists and still run Basic Plus via the TBX emulator on three machines. I even set up the 6th British ISP with half a dozen DEC Alphas - the first on the Isle of Man but of course they used DEC Unix not RSTS.

Extra comment re current version of Filezilla. I noted a protocol failure in a previous post but drilling down in settings I found an override for TLS version which - if you ignore the insecure warning - you can set to 1.0 and then the app works. [At your risk!]

Thx - good to know there is an override. This confirms that you are using FTPS, and not FTP.
