Snow Leopard and AFP issue NV+ 4.1.8

I haven't connected directly to the NAS, the closest I've come is using a wired connection through a switch. The switch is an SMC SMC8508T, which is unmanaged. The Layer 3 router that I'm using is an Airport Extreme 802.11n (2nd Generation), which is currently running the 7.6 firmware. I specify because I have a Wifi router that I use strictly as a WAP. That is, it's on the same subnet as the LAN behind the Airport Extreme, and performs no routing. I have tried two routers in this capacity, with the same issues.
Since I'm currently not supporting any Lion clients, going back to 4.1.7 feels like the easiest solution to this problem.
