Upgraded to Sierra: TimeMachine "the network backup disk does not support the required capabilities"

I have a ReadyNAS Ultra 4 that has been working great for years.  Upgrading to MacOSX Sierra

 seems to have broken TimeMachine.

Model: ReadyNAS Ultra 4 [X-RAID2]
Firmware: RAIDiator 4.2.28

Just updated MacOSX to Sierra last night, now I get this from TimeMachine:  "the network backup disk does not support the required capabilities"

Then I went into TimeMachine preferences, and disconnected the disk.   Then tried to reselect the backup location but then got:  "The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again."   I changed the password on the ReadyNAS to force TimeMachine to prompt, and it did. .    Then it sat with "Connecting...." for a very long time afterwhich it prompts:

The selected network backup disk does not support the required capabilities.

Please choose a different network backup disk.

How to fix?

  • So.... after rebooting the ReadyNAS after upgrading to "4.2.31" firmware, I was able to get TimeMachine to connect to the disk without any errors - and disk status shows in the TimeMachine preferences now...

Once I chose "Backup Now", it waits a long time on  "Looking for backup disk...", then changes to "Preparing backup...".... fingers crossed, but it seems to be going now....

Confirmed, TimeMachine is currently backing up, so I guess I fixed the problem!
