You think I should continue with RNDP6000?
When he moved, my client gave me a ReadyNAS Pro unit he bought from me in 2009 and barely used.
It was dead but I brought it back to life with a new PSU and I updated firmware to latest (4.2.30).
I'm thinking of using it at home by upgrade from my NVX+ to it. We have a PC and Mac.
It has 6 1TB Drives in it now, but I want to get at least 4TB of storage. It looks like the max drive size it will support is a 4TB.
So I was thinking of buying 2 WD Red 4TB drives and use the unit in XRaid2, knowing I can add another pair of drives later to double the space. Hoping this unit will last me a couple of years before having to spend a bunch on a full unit upgrade.
Thoughts?
Pros?
Cons?
what you can do is this. install readynasos 6 on the device. its not officially supported but you can find documentation on how to do it on the forums here.
that will give you two things.
1. support for much bigger drives. im not 100% sure but i think even 10tb drives will work, since the limitation was on the OS, not the hardware.
2. OS-updates. os6 is the current version of the readynas operating system. while not designed for the rndp6000 in particular it will still run on the device with some minor modifications and you will be able to update it as well. i have a friend who is running os6 on the rndp6000 and it works just fine.
but you should be aware that you will not get official support for any problems that arise.
still it will give the device a few more years of life (until the hardware dies, or os6 doesnt get updates anymore).
just my opinion on this.

Staying with 4.2.30 for now is also an option, as long as you are aware of the limitations. If you stay with 4.2.30 then your expansion limit will be 8 TiB from the original volume size. So you'd be able to go from 2x4TB to 4x4TB (4 TB to 12 TB of space), but going further would require a factory reset.
Going with OS 6 eliminates that ceiling, and also gives you access to some new features (for instance ReadyCloud) and apps that aren't available with OS 4.2.
FWIW, my pro-6 remains in service, and is running 4.2.30. It's working well for me, but the next time I need to reset it I'll upgrade it to OS 6.

Very true, but if your unit is used, then you aren't going to get official support anyway.

I would suggest backing up the Pro to your old unit (well at least the most important data).
