Resetting Admin Password on NV+v2
OK GUYS. I just bought this ReadyNAS NV+v2 with 4 bays from E-Bay. Ive installed 2 WD Red Hard Drives each with 4Tb storage in slots 1 and 2. The seller of the NAS told me it had been factory res...

Thanks stephen B. Since my initial query I have now done an OS Reinstall by pressing the Reset Button. I must say that the instruction both in the manual and in the article could have been worded a little better. It suggests you wait for the LED lights to blink etc but it wasnt untill i re read the instructions very carefully for the 3rd time that I realised that you only held the reset button UNTILL the boot menu appeared and then pressed the backup button to navigate before selecting the option by pressing and releasing the reset button again... This seems a little contrary to the page showing flashing leds on hard drives to indicate what boot option you had selected. Perhaps this is for the duo ! ? Anyway i got that part figured though im concerned my led's didnt flash so im wondering if theres damage to them or the control board.. So moving on
So i did the OS reinstall and it flashed the firmware but it allso seemed to connect to the server and install an addon which was a little spooky. I dont like technology doing anything i dont specifically ask it to however I completed the reinstall of the OS and was using my old laptop in the room where the nas is situated and im damned if i could get access to the dashboard with the admin and password defaults which i now knew were correct. It sat there waiting for the nas 192.168.x.xx . Nothing Zip Nada. So i started to do some research concerning this and found others with Browser issues so i thought id try IE as I had been using firefox. Straight away IE got into the dashboard even though it was an older version while firfox is upto date !. Go figure. However a lot of the display was corrupt. Its like it wasnt handling CSS or some Java maybe. That would figure as i cant update to the latest java on the laptop as its still running XP as its not up to vista or win7. I like to keep xp about for the older apps anyway !
So i went onto a newer pc and straight away I got into the dashboard using firefox. Im curious to know what the incompatability could be and if theres anyway arround this as I would still like access to the dashboard using the laptop as its set up next to the NV+ and my main PC is on another floor ! I remember being critical to myself about the appearance of the config screen of an old netgear router DG v3 i think. It WORKED however on any browser i used ! Perhaps this fancy GUI interface the Dashboard employs isn't such a good idea !!
So I now have full access, Im still on FW 5.3.11 and will update to 5.3.12 tomorrow now as its getting late here in Scotland but ive made progress and learned a lot about my NV+ in the process and now feel more confident in its operation so thats a blessing. Its not that its difficult once you have done it successfully for the first time its just daunting as you fear screwing it up and having to do a factory reset which takes an age. The unit is obviously legacy and without this community I know i would have struggled far more than I have with the issues ive encountered to date. Mostly user error I may add. Well I guess thats about all for one night folks. Thanks again for all your help and directions.

Do you know what it installed? It shouldn't have installed an add-on (though it wouldn't have removed an add-on that was already there).

The duo and nv+ are both in the manual, and the boot-menu procedures are different (the duo has no LCD).

I don'know the details on what it is (and I don't own a v2 NAS so I have no way to check). They do need to make changes in the UI from time to time to maintain browser compatibity, and it is quite possible that sometimes those changes break older versions.

Hi StephenB,
I cant be sure what was installed as the litte display window on the front only gave a message like Installing Add Ons or something to that effect. It was only displayed for a short period of time. Maybe 10 or 15 seconds. It was in the early hours this morning. 1 or 2 am before I went to bed so I cant recal with clarity. However when I first open the Admin page it shows and Icon in the Installed Add Ons area under the Health and Shares areas. The icon is of a cartoonified, cant recall the corect artistic term right now, but a cartoonified camera/file or folder merging together or it just might be a simplified camera. Depends on how you look at it i suppose. Anyway its labelled ReadyNas Photos II.When i navigate to Configure, Add-ons, Installed it is showen in there as well. I never selected this however so Im suspecting that the firmweare is installing this on the fly as part of the software automatically. Its likely something to do with photo sharing. Can this be easily removed as its not something I require.
II was definately reading from the NV+ section of the manual . I even printed those pages out and it says as much on each page of the manual if your in the NV+ or the Duo section ! I also have a Duo which the NV+ is replacing so cn tell the difference relatively well :D However I suspect that parts of the manual got mixed up ! Im thinking thay used part of the Duo Procedure in the NV+ Procedure. Ive worked it out now so no big deal though I would hope NetGear would look at htis and perhaps update or correct the manul to help assist future users. Its just a heads up is all !
As to the browser incompatability. Im a little further on but its even more confusing. Firefow refuses to work at all on my laptop with XP. IE works buts is severly bugged. When i went to my main pc with win 7 and the same version of firefox as my laptop then firefox works fine. However when i installed opera on my laptop with xp it worked perfect. So whatever the issue is its not neccessarilly xp thats the culprit but more how the browsers interact with whatever os is installed. Im starting to think it might be a MS.Net framework or Java issue, something thats kinda 3rd party, that FF and IE utilise but opera dosent.
Well i seem to be making progress anyway :) PLease have a look at my post regarding setting up E-mail Alerts and configuring the E-Mail recipient as im having trouble there too :/
Sorry and thaks for the help :D

That is a Netgear add-on, so it is not a back door. They haven't done much with it, and users have reported problems here. I suggest not using it (perhaps disable it, but leave it installed).

The good news is that you have a work-around.
