Extending my R6400 network with a Netgear Extender
Quick Question for home and garage network...have been using Apple Airport extremes as wireless "extenders" to my wired Netgear router (wifi turned off on the R6400).
If I remove the Airports and switch on the Netgear Wifi, will a Netgear 7700 extend the Network effectively?
Thanks
Chris

Its hard to tell you a for certain yes or no because many factors influence wifi speeds as well as how effective extenders are.
These include housing materials, house size, wifi interference from other signals, materials within the walls (hvac), mode on the extender that you're using, etc.
For sure the EX7700 works well. But will it work well in your home? uncertain. Sometimes stuff has to be tried out to see if it improves your setup or not. As well as many optimizations can be done with wireless extenders to help them perform better. many just buy them and set them in a single location without trying to move them around for optimization.

Plus it matters which apple extreme you're using. There's 6x generations of apple airport extreme's. The newest AC version, you might not see any benefit from but you might if you're replacing some of the older ones.

Hey thanks a lot for replying Plemans, currently have a five year old (pretty much the latest, as they've been discontinued) Airport Extreme handling wireless duty, feeding to three Airport Expresses (latest models), with the Extreme attached to my Netgear R6400, with its wifi switched off. The Netgear 7700 mesh wifi extender has pretty good reviews, isn't too expensive, and I guess may be worth a try to replace all the airport units, as they're a bit old now, and the range could be better...if there was a different extender to try, I might go for that..
Thanks again

The airport express is an older dual band wireless n device. There wasn't a huge change in broadcast strength in the transition from wireless n to wireless AC but the processor/capabilities of the EX7700 are a significant upgrade. You might be able to replace with a single EX7700. Worth a shot in the upgrade.
