Apologies, the beep was coming from the alarm of a temperature monitor that had been set and placed by grandson down the side of an armchair next to the mains power socket. I'm going to let it pass this time and keep quiet about it. I don't want to let him know he has won and wasted a lot of my time (and yours). The extender is operating normally now and was probably grateful for the short rest it had.
