WNDR3400v2 as "Wireless Repeater (WDS)"

(for stater's my apologizes this post is quite long winded)

I am having trouble setting up my Netgear n600 dual band router as a wireless repeater. Best Place to start I guess would be physical hardware, and a network layout.

Hardware: ISP = COX highspeed cable; broadband 54Mbps (roughly); Modem = Motorola Surfboard SBG6580 DOCSIS 3.0 single band 2.4Ghz/5Ghz; Router = Netgear n600 wireless dual band 2.4Ghz/5Ghz WNDR3400v2; PC(at hand) = Dell 790 Optiplex (no WiFi).

Network Layout: Cable modem is in the front room (physically connected to TV PC and overhead projector via LAN cable. (to watch internet TV, I do not wish to move modem), 790 PC and N600 router is in the back room (for local gaming & internet gaming one day, again i do not wish to move).

A few things that I *think* I know already, (please correct me if I am wrong)

WNDR3400v2: for "Wireless Repeating Function (WDS)" both units (modem/router) must share the same; SSID, mode, channel, and security.

*note if security is enabled only WEP can be used.

SBG6580: for "Wireless Bridging" both units must share the same; channel, method of encryption, and encryption key.

*note DHCP can only preside on the modem.

1st question, in order to enable WEP on the modem 802.11 n-mode must be disable (fact), but does that mean that I am no longer getting 5Ghz even if that's was is broadcasting? moving on.

SBG6580's walk-though (this guild paraphrases this setup as a WDS config) http://broadband.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/20847

SBG6580's modem config;
SSID: WiFiRePete,
Mode: 54g LRS (not very clear if this is the "Mode" mentioned before but Motorola's definition on this mode is quote "54g LRS inter-operates with the widest variety of 54g, 802.11g, and 802.11b clients." other options for this drop-down are 54g Auto, 54 Performance, and 802.11b ONLY)
Channel: 5
Security: WEP; identicalpassphrase; Network Key# 4
Wireless 802.11 Bridging: enabled (all 3 netgear Mac Address added to list LAN, 2.4Ghz, and 5Ghz in that order)
Broadcast Network: yes
802.11 Band: 2.4Ghz
DHCP Server: enabled
LAN IP: 192.168.1.1 (default was 192.168.0.1 but i changed it)
Starting Local Address: 192.168.1.2
Reserve new IP address: (router's wifi) MAC address (this varies on what band the netgear is repeating 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz, but because the Modem is broadcasting 2.4Ghz I entered the netgear's 2.4Ghz MAC Address, couldnt find anything to specify weather im supppose to put the Netgear's LAN, or Wifi MAC here, but when i scan for wireless AP's the Motorola finds WNDR3400v2 by the Wifi MAC) IP Address: 192.168.1.2 Host name: WNDR3400v2 (i assume that the Device Name listed in the Netgear config page is another term for host name? Either way this is probably over kill as after configing with no luck I set all other devices on the network to static IP's to avoid any other nodes on the network taking 192.168.1.2)
DDNS serivce: Disabled
whew...

WNDR3400v2's router config;
SSID: WiFiRePete
Mode: Up to 54 Mbps (this is compatible with the Motorola's 54g LRS right?)
Channel: 5
Security: WEP; identicalpassphrase; Network Key# 4
LAN Setup; Device Name: WNDR3400v2, Use Router as DHCP Server: disabled, [apply] (connection lost but after setting the 790 PC to static IP 192.168.1.30 connection was reestablished) IP Address: 192.168.1.2 [apply] (note that when i run, run > cmd > ipconfig /all, the default gateway is now 192.168.1.2 and when i enter config page for WNDR3400v2, browser reports 192.168.1.2/start.htm)
Wireless Repeating; Enable wireless repeating Function 2.4Ghz b/g/n: yes/check, Wireless Repeater: enabled, Repeater IP Address: 198.162.1.1 Base Station MAC Address: *not sure which one to use here, the LAN or the WiFi* there is a separate MAC for LAN, WAN, and WiFi in the Motorola config page i went with the LAN.

That's all i got, hopefully someone with more EXP can explain what I'm doing wrong, even better if they can get this repeater setup working.
