WNDR3400v2 - Problem with 2.4Ghz connections
Background
We just moved but kept our cable ISP (Charter). We have had this NG 3400v2 router since June 2012 and have not had any issues until we connected to the new cable modem at the new house. At the previous installation we used both 2.4 and 5 Ghz connections in secure mode (WPA2) without issue.
Symptoms
-Unable to establish connection to 2.4Ghz in any mode other than non-secure.
-5Ghz works fine (with WPA2)
-RF is good (used NetSpot to check SNR on 2.4 and 5)
Extremely frustrated, any ideas would be appreciated.

I experienced the same problem a few days ago:
Can connect to 5Ghz w/out any problems.
2.4 Ghz shows up with a strong signal on my android phone, Win 7 desktop, Samsung phone, Macbook and iPad. However, when anything tries to connect, the signal immediately drops and no connection is made.
I seemed to have fixed the problem by doing the following:
1. I enabled the 2.4 Ghz guest network. It was disabled before. Once I did this, I am able to connect to the main 2.4Ghz using WPA2-PSK.
2. After connection to the main 2.4, I disabled the 2.4 Guest Network. Immediately, I lost my connection to the main 2.4 channel.
3. I re-enabled the 2.4 Guest Network and immediately I was reconnected to the main PW protected 2.4
So, if you did not have the 2.4Guest Network enabled, enable it and see if that works. It doesn't matter if you the Guest Network has a password or not. In may case, I used WPA2-PSK on both the regular and Guest network. FWIW, I do NOT have the 5Ghz Guest Network enabled.
As others have noted, if you remove security from the regular 2.4Ghz channel, it will connect. However, I want to use P-word security.
Hope this helps!

- jmizoguchiVirtuosoFirst is to hard reset the router and check again.
- Sherry07Tutorif resetting ther device doesn't work, probably there are a lot of devices in your area that might be interfering the signal such as cordless phones and your neighbor's wireless routers.
If that's the case, try changing the channels of your 2.4 ghz wireless network. Best channels are 1,3,6,9, and 11.

1,3,6,9, and 11.
1,6,11 and 13 for Europe... :)- rajeshbondeAspirant
I stay in Mumbai India and facing same problem.
2.4Ghzworks only in non secured option
5 ghz work fine in secured mode but dint support Laptop and Netgear extender

rajeshbonde Do you have the latest firmware installed? How about doing a hard reset on the unit?
1. With the unit powered on, press and hold the reset button on the back of unit for 30seconds.
2. Without releasing the reset button, unplug the unit and hold reset for another 30 seconds.
3. Power on the unit while STILL pushing the reset button and count for another 30 seconds before letting it go.After resetting, reconfigure the router and see if it helps.
Let us know what happens.
Regards,
- Sherry07Tutoroh I'm sorry, I dodn't know where he's from. :(
:P - jmizoguchiVirtuosoChannel 3,9 are not the common channel to use in 2.4Ghz with wifi that's all.
actually when Channel 13 are used next below would be 9 and not 11. - MccordjpTutorThanks for the replies.
I have done hard reset multiple times one of which included a reload of the latest firmware.
As I posted, I ran a RF scan using NetSpot and there is virtually no traffic on both bands and the SNR is very good. Even still, after reading other threads I have tried the arbitrary change of channels out of desperation to no avail. As far as location, I am in California and the nearest house to me is more than 100yards away. - jmizoguchiVirtuosotry reflash the firmware
- MccordjpTutorAs stated in my last post I did that already, no joy.
I was hoping to get a little more than trivial boilerplate solutions/explainations on this thread. Perhaps too lofty of an expectation, I know.
Off to replace the POS today with a Dlink... - hawkphotographyAspirantI had the 3400v2 running for a while with no issue, then the speeds dropped to a slow crawl and a 6mb file would take 10-20 mins to download. Was seeing this a lot, and reset the router. Was better for a while, but then yesterday I couldn't connect at all with an HP laptop. Could connect fine with a different HP that could also see the N side of the signal. The laptop that wouldn't connect was only a G-band wifi.
Got so bad, I swapped back to my older netgear until I can figure this out. I'm on the .34 version of the firmware.
I also changed the channel to 11, per other posts related to interference. - NeoTheCoolAspirantThank you sawdin! This worked for me. I can now connect to the main 2.4. The guest won't connect, but that's a non issue.
I even stopped broadcasting the guest network, and the main 2.4ghz is still connecting. Odd, but it works. Slow death of the router? Maybe...
