5 TopicsGaming Lag - Firmware?
So here's my situation. Recenlty (last couple months) I have noticed significant lag wile playing COD on my PS4. At first I thought it was my controller, because my charactor was running around like I was drunk (looking left/right, etc was exaggerated). Plus there was a .5-1 sec lag between pulling the trigger and my gun actually firing, not to mention I was extremely choppy on comms (PS4 party). It was not happening all the time, but often enough to cause me to look into the issue further. After eliminating my controllers as the issue, I started to look at the router. I factory reset the router and manually configured it. QoS was turned on. After reset, I checked firmware and updated (1.0.3.20 to 1.0.3.24). Problem continued. Fast forward to this week. I updated to latest firmware (1.0.3.26). Performed a factory reset and manually configured router. Again, turned on QoS. Noticed major lag on my game when other devices are streaming content (wife streaming Hulu and daughter on YouYube Kids). One by one I eliminated devices and found the worst lag was beign caused by the iPad streaming YouTube Kids. I check the attached device list on the router config page and saw that my total DL usage was less than 15Mbps (UL was less than 1Mbps). I have a symmetircal 100Mbps fiber connection so bandwidh is not the issue. On a hunch, I grabbed my old WNR2000 router (yes from like 2009), manually configured the wireless settings to match that of the Nighthawk so all of my wirelss devices would connect without me having to reconfigure them. I turned off QoS and tested. Not a blip. I had 1 TV streaming Hulu, the iPad streaming YouTube Kids, my MS Surface streaming YouTube and my phone streaming YouTube and I experinced no lag whatsoever. So my $30 entry-level, older-than-dirt router was handling traffic better than my 1 year old $200 gaming router. Baffling to me. I went back to the Nighthawk and turned off QoS and matched all of the other network settings from my WNR2000. Lag was now worse even when only the iPad was streaming. Had to turn QoS back on, but lag continued, just not as bad. This prompted me to get into these forums to see if this was a known issue. It seems to me like downgrading the firmware is about my only option (as suggested by multiple users from various lag-related posts). As it sits, it will be unusable for FPS gaming unless I am the only one using the internet. So, before I play the download old firmware, factory reset, install old firmware, factory reset, manually configure and test game, I was wondering if someone coud suggest a specific firmware version that woud be recommended. Loading and testing firmware decrementally will be time-consuming. Looking back at the release notes for prior versions, they only list each version as bug fixes and security updates. I am hoping someone with more knowledge of the firmware versions can make an educated suggestion as to what version to use. I assume it would not be a good idea to go too far back in versions. I am really hoping that this is a firmware issue and not a hardware issue. Very frustrating having a useless $200 gaming router that is being out-performed by a $30 entry-level router. Thank you in advance as any help is appreciated.Solved21KViews1like12CommentsR7500 slow LAN speeds with Arris 6190 cable internet modem
I activated a new cable internet modem today and my LAN throughput, as measured via speedtest.net, dropped significantly Internet Provider: Comcast, Tier: Performance Pro Setup: Arris SB6190 -- R7500v2 -- wired PC Up until noon today, i was running an older Motorola SB6120 cable internet modem (DOCSIS 3.0 4x4 channels). I bought this right when Comcast upgraded to DOCSIS 3.0 to enjoy the benefits. The 6120 is getting old and I wanted to upgrade to a newer modem and bought the Arris SB6190... trying to future-proof myself, at least for the *near* future in the DOCSIS 3.0 context. Speeds (via speedtest.net): SB6120 (4 down/4 upstream channels): --Router (via the QoS config page/speedtest.net): ~90Mbps down/~6Mbps up --PC: ~80 down/6up SB6190 (16 down/4 up-- 6190 supports 32, but only 16 bonded for my service): --Router: ~90Mbps/6Mbps --PC:~21Mbps/6Mbps Details: --R7500v2 firmware 1.0.3.4 --QoS = Off --Traffic monitoring = Off --Guest Network = Disabled --NIC on the PC is set to auto-negotiate 10/100. It's a integrated NIC on my HP PC, NVIDIA nForce 10/100 I got a case, called support, went through the following: --Changed 2.4 wireless channels to 11, then 9 (I just did what they asked... how this impacts LAN traffic, I don't know) --Changed MTU size to 1432 --Reset to factory settings None of the following resolved the issue; still only getting ~21Mbps at the PC when the Router is used. However, if I bypass the R7500, plugging the PC into the SB6190, then i'm back to ~90/6Mbps down/up speeds. I've seen other similar reports (via some internet searches) but no real solutions. Anyone resolve a similar issue? Thanks!Solved7.2KViews0likes4CommentsNetgear R7500 & R7500v2 need updated SSL Key in a firmware update
No this is not a "feature request" posting, but another highlight of Netgear not being ontop of their own "active" (not EOL) product line. The original Netgear R7500 and the revision R7500v2 need firmware updates that contain the updated SSL key from Qualcomm Atheros to allow owners to access database updates for the Dynamic QoS (QCA Streamboost-based). Without this update, R7500 and R7500v2 owners can only update the QoS database file to the one dated April 2015. Owners can not get the database update that was issued by Qualcomm in August 2015 and the latest from December 2015; not to mention any other database updates coming. The new SSL key was added starting in the v1.0.0.28 firmware for the January 2016 released R7800. At best, users know that Netgear is months behind on getting this out to it's users as the new keys I am told were issued in the second half of Summer 2015 and here we are less than a month from the first day of Spring 2016 (March 20th).Solved9.4KViews0likes15CommentsNot getting full bandwidth 300/20 on r7500v2
ISP- Time Warner Cable Speed - 300/20 Router - nighthawk x4 r7500v2 Firmwares I've tried - 10.0.24 - .28 I currently have the Arris DG1670A modem/router in BRIDGED mode and the nighthawk r7500v2 connected. When I test speeds in the QOS speedtest the highest is 124mb/s. I do speedtest on speedtest.net and it goes from 320 and drops to about 120-210mb/s. Same applies with speedOf.me speedtest and DSLreports. Then there are timessage where I only get about 15mb/s down but I have to keep rebooting or restoring to factory settings to get back to the higher speeds mentioned. I'm currently at a loss on what actually is the problem. I just bought the router two days ago. Yes, when I plug directly into modem I get full speeds even 320mb/s at times as well.Solved6.2KViews0likes7Comments
