scrub
6 TopicsRecamended order for maintenance: (Scrub, Defrag, Balance, Disk Test).
I read the suggested schedule for maintenance activities but did not see a recommended order. Some activities will affect the condition that other activities correct (eg; scrubbing may affect fragmentation). Is there a recommended order to maintenance activities? Thanks in advance Radjin~Solved3.2KViews0likes6CommentsEDA500 on RN516 - Scrub very slow
This problem has been previously reported by another user on an earlier version of the OS: ReadyNAS-516-2x-EDA500-Scrub-on-EDA500-very-slow. It persists in OS6.7.5. As scheduled, my main data volume (6x6TB XRAID=21.88TB) started a scrub and competed it in about 30 hours. My eda-1 volume (5x4TB XRAID=12.5TB) then began it's scrub. That initially locked up the NAS. The log shows eda scrub starting before data volume scrub was finished, which may be the reason for the lockup and likely extended the data volume scrub time. I need to space the out more in the schedule). I had to reboot and then manually re-started the eda scrub. It's going to take a lifetime (0.01% complete in 5 hours). Top shows CPU usage of around 4% for md125_raid5 with a priority of 20 and 2% for md125_resync.with a priority of 39. The really off thing is that I swear the eda volume scrub was in the 20% range at lock-up even though it had only been running a bit over a day. Could it have been running faster when the data volume scrub was ongoing? Is there anything I can do to safely speed this up? When will Netgear address this issue?3.8KViews0likes14CommentsProBE with OS 6.4.2 locks up on Scrub
I have a ProBE, upgraded to an E7500 processor, 4GB of RAM, and OS 6.4.2. It has 6 3TB WD red's and a LOT of files filling it about 75%. It is my media drive, but does not run any media server software and ReadyDLNA is disabled. It does run DDClient, but nothing else that runs continuously. It is scheduled to do a Scrub every Tuesday. Twice now, it has completely locked up somewhere during the scrub. The start of the scrub is logged, the end is not. Normally, it takes about 14 hours to complete. By "locks up", I mean no RAIDar or other presence on the network and no display if the power button is pushed. A hard reset does gets it going again. One scrub did successfully complete between the two that did not. I just started a manual one, will see how that goes. So far, so good. Anything that I should look for as to a reason? No other clues in the logs I can find.3KViews0likes5Comments"Scrub" killed my NAS :( #27023882
I used to have scrubs running monthly... (recently changed to every 3 months, but now I'll have to disable completely.) I started a scrub on Jun 16th, at 17:00. By 11pm on the 17th, it was only at around 33%. By 1am, it was spitting out warnings that it failed to make snapshops. Around the same time, my windows machine lost it's iSCSI connection to the NAS. By 10am the same morning, the entire NAS was locked up. None of the blue activity LED's were flashing, I could ping it, but the web interface wouldn't respond, I couldn't ssh into it, none of the shares worked, The front display didn't work (and even tapping the power button didn't work!!!) I ended up having to hard reset the NAS (press/hold the power button.) I see there have been previous threads about scrub's starting to take a VERY LONG time or other scrub issues, but those threads don't ever seem to be properly resolved. They just either fade away or the poor victim ends up factory reseting their NAS. (On the other hand, I didn't see any other threads where the person let it run until the entire thing was locked up.) Obviously, I've hard reset the NAS so it's no longer locked up, but I did download the logs in case someone from netgear perhaps wants to, perhaps, postmortem the issue. Please let me know who to send them it... (Edit: it's running 6.5.0) Gary4.4KViews0likes16CommentsHang during Scrub
My 314 hung last night while doing a scrub. Solid activity light but only intermittent "clicks" of disk activity. No AFP, FTP, Web GUI or even SSH access was possible. Had to force power down. The unit is now 60%+ through a resync, so I'm not inclined to think it's a failing HDD (knock on wood). Can anyone think of a likely reason the system would hang so badly during a scrub?2.3KViews0likes3CommentsReadynas 3220 - What is recommended volume maintenance schedule (scrub, balance, defrag)
We recently got a new 12 drive Readynas 3220 loaded with (12) WD RE 4TB drives and are moving about 2 TB of data to it. The unit is currently on the 6.4.0 firmware but will be upgraded shortly. This will be the main file server for our architectural office so will be used for storage of Revit and AutoCAD files as well as the usual office type files. Given that we are donig more with Revit (large files) and more rederings we anticipate that the total amount of data will grow over time. I want to make sure that the unit is maintained properly to ensure a good long life without trouble. I've read in a post from several years ago that scrubbing was only recommended a couple of times a year but did not see specific recommendations for defrag and balancing. What is the currently recommended schedules for scrubs, defrags, and balancing for this unit in our type of use? Thanks in advance for sharing your expertise.Solved4.1KViews0likes2Comments
