6 TopicsRN3220 / RN4200 Crippling iSCSI Write Performance
I've got a mixed OEM ecosystem with several Tier 2 RN3220's and RN4200's along with Tier 1 EqualLogic storage appliances. All ReadyNAS appliances have 12 drive compliments Seagate Enterprise 4TB drives in them. I wanted to be able to use the ReadyNAS' as iSCSI options, particuarly for maintainance cycles on the storage network, so I re-purposed them from NFS use. Factory reset them onto 6.6 firmware and they have subsequently been upgraded to 6.7.1 with no change in symptoms. The drives have no errors It's a new install, so there are no fragmentation issues etc. The NAS's use X-RAID I've set them up with 2 NIC 1GbE MPIO from the Hyper-V side (I've also tried it on 10GbE and on 1 NIC 1GbE with no impact). 9k jumbo frames are on There are no teams on the RN's Checksum is off Quota is off iSCSI Target LUN's are all thick Write caching is on (UPS's are in place) Sync writes are disabled As many services as I can find are off, there are no SMB shares No NetGear apps or cloud services No snapshots The short summary of the problem is that if I migrate a VM VHDX storage from the EqualLogic on to any of the ReadyNAS appliances, accross the same storage network and running from the same hypervisor, the data migration takes an eternity and once the move completes the write performance is uterrly, utterly crippled. Here are the ATTO stats: Same VM, on the same 1GbE network. In the case of the above over 1x 1GbE, single path, all running on the same switches. Moving the VM back to the EqualLogic storage takes a fraction of the time to move and the performance of the VM is instantly restored. According to the ATTO data above the ReadyNAS should be offering better performance than the substantially more expensive EqualLogic, however in this condition these units are next to useless. If I create an SMB share and perform a file copy of the storage network, I can get 113MB/s off of a file copy on a 1x1GbE NIC, with no problems. So it does not look like a network issue. Does anyone have any ideas? I have one of the 3220's in a state that I can do anything to. The only thing that I haven't done is try Flex-RAID instead of X-RAID, but these numbers do not look like a RAID parity calculation issue. I have 4 drives in a Raid 5 config. I have been encountering very slow speeds with smaller files. So, I conducted a test using a directory of 164 small files totalling about 200KB [sic]. The tests just copies this directory from my NAS to a place on my SSD. The target PC is a fast windows 10 machine. I wanted to see if Avast AV and Malwarebytes (MB) were effecting the time to copy the dir. Here are some results: AV and MB - about 90 seconds AV and MB up but all real time protections turned off - 67 seconds AV, No MB (MB actually closed/exited) - 4.5 seconds No AV (disabled), No MB (closed) - 1.5 seconds No AV (disabled) and MB (all on) - 17 seconds So this tells us that Without AV or MB (shut down completely) - the baseine speed is 1.5 seconds. Just MB is 17 seconds, > 10x longer than the baseline - MB gives it the biggest hit and oddly that hit is mostly still there if its up but real time protections are disabled Just AV is 4.5 seconds - 3x longer than baseline MV+AV is 90 seconds - 20x longer than baseline. The speed is closer to a multiplicative effect of the MB and AV hits versus addative. At this pont, I imagine a person reading this is thinkin, "Uh huh, what's that have to do with a NAS?" Here are the corresponding times copied from a local standard HD AV and MB - about 0.3 seconds not done AV, No MB (MB actually closed/exited) - 0.17 seconds No AV (disabled), No MB (closed) - 0.17 seconds No AV (disabled) and MB (all on) - 0.3 seconds So when a local HD is the source ( the NAS isn't the source): When AV and MB are on it's 300x faster than with the NAS - this is the big deal. The effect of the AV is negligable (vs with the NAS it made the copy 3 times slower) without either, the basline is 5x faster without the NAS (which, given the small file sizes might be OK relatively and probably not that big a deal in absolute times (an acceptable time waiting for tasks) Obviously, I'll ping the MB and Avast but as I'm using free Avast that's unlikley plus this 3 product issue is a recipe for finger pointing. MB is obviouly the bigger deal but why it's so lethal with AV when the NAS in particular is involved is the big bugaboo. EDIT One more interesting item: When I do a Properties on the copied directory on the SSD vs the NAS, they both report 200K for the files but the SSD rports 420KB actually occupied on disk while the NAS reports 10.2MB! That's seems a bit much of a disparity. These files are about 1K actual each which for the NAS comes out to be each 1K file taking about 64K (well, 62K) of disk space.5.8KViews0likes6CommentsFolder navigation and file transfer on Apple Mac extremely slow
When accessing the ReadyNAS RN104 from a 2011 MacBook Pro through Finder (whether the app itself or from inside another app's open dialog) it takes an extremely long time to populate a folder or transfer a file. Clicking on folders in finder can take several minutes of the wait cursor spinning before the folder is sudden;y populated. It can take up to ten minutes to transfer a file of a few KB. This problem appears to be intermittent and random and sometimes will work correctly but more often than not the issue is there which makes the NAS virtually unusable. I have the ReadyNAS RN104 installed on my local network attached via ethernet to my wifi router. The IPv4 address is set using DHCP from the router and DNS is working correctly as I can ping the NAS unit by hostname from all systems on the LAN. Firmware on the NAS is version 6.6.0. I have two MacBook Pros and the issue affects both of them, while I also have two Windows 10 laptops which have no problem at all. The issue occurs on the Macs whether we use AFP or SMB to access the NAS and happens whether we connect over wifi or a direct ethernet connection to the router (negating wifi problems as a factor). I have had the RN104 for nearly a year now and this issue always seems to have been there. I've never been able yet to get a good performance from my RN102. It's usable as backup / storage and streaming media via DLNA also seems to work well on my BlueRay player, but anything that goes via SMB or AFP to my laptop is terribly slow. I've posted a question about the ReadyCLOUD app on Mac OS not seeing the RN102 unit online elsewhere, but the iOS ReadyCLOUD app does work. I can navigate the file system and display photos. However, video files are problematic. They do eventually load, but the lag makes it practically unusable. The playback also stops quite often and has to be started again by tapping the play symbol. Is there any way to make this unit a bit more zippy? updated: updating the firmware of the Airport failed, so I'm now using the MediaAccess TG789bvn modem / router instead (original setup was to use that as modem only, connected to the Airport by ethernet and use that as wifi router). Wifi speed is now 144 Mbps; I'll report back if this works better. Firmware 6.5.2 OSX 10.12 / iOS 10.02 MacBook Pro, Mid 2012 ReadyNAS 102 is connected to the LAN by ethernet to a via an Apple Airport that also functions as LAN wifi router MediaAccess TG789bvn modem / router + Admin page access via browser is fine. - ReadyCLOUD for mac os always shows RN102 offline + / - ReadyCLOUD for iOS too slow for video playback + / - CIFS / SMB and AFP both work when connecting via the Finder, though often too slow to be useful (navigating / listing directories takes very very very long)Solved3.8KViews0likes5CommentsUnresponsive/Slow NAS performance post Anti-Virus + upgrade
Hello all Since upgrading to firmware V6.4.1 and upgrading Ant-virus + to version 2.0.3 I have been suffering extraordinary slow/unresponsive performance from my Ready NAS 102. For example: There have been times when it would not allow me to login to the web GUI. Windows Vista, 7 and 10 explorer progress bars took minutes to load directory structures. I noticed an improvement after rebooting the NAS but this was short lived less than 15 minutes. The 4TB NAS drives are only about 25% full operating in a home environment so has a light duty cycle. The Web GUI says the drives are healthy and are operating in the ~38 degree Celsius. The fan is running about ~800 rpm. No virus have ever been found on these drives. Ani-Virus + is the only application that I run on the NAS other than the default ones. I turned off AFS (Apple File System) as not required. I have cleaned out the dust accumulation from 2 years use but the CPU temperature remained in the mid-high 60 degree Celsius range. I felt this is a little higher than it should be. On a hunch I decided to turn off the Anti-Virus + process. A partly loaded file suddenly and dramatically completed loading and equally importantly the CPU temperature dropped to mid-50s degree Celsius within a few minutes. I then performed some file loading tests using an I5 Lenovo T430 laptop. Test file was an XLS of 1.8GB. Application was pre-loaded. Anti-Virus off 7 seconds CPU temp ~55 degrees C Anti-Virus on 3:52 CPU temp rose to ~66 degrees Celsius during the load. I do not any pre-upgrade load time figures for comparison but load times where acceptable. The conclusion is that there is something seriously wrong with the latest version of Anti-Virus + or the priority assigned to the application. I note that other users are experiencing similar response problems but the little I have read have not done much in the way of quantitative measurements. I am reluctant to turn off Anti-Virus + but see little alternative. How can I roll back the Anti-Virus + application and/or when is a fix coming? I'm having a problem with my RN102 - I'm using it to store/stream media on my home network. My home network is a combination of xp, win7, win8 and win10 machines. On win 7 I can access the shares and read the folders almost as if it were a local drive. On win10 its a nightmare - if I click on a drive/share, it'll take ages to give me a listing of the root directory. I get a green progress bar accross the top of windows explorer that just creeps along at the speed of a glacier. I can go away make some coffee, come back, and if I'm lucky I'll be able to see the contents of the drive. The problem continues if I want to go down a level, read the contents of a folder for example - same thing. Only from the win10 machine. Also - I've noticed, if I copy large media files to the RN102, I pretty much can't use it til the next day, because even though the data has left my PC and has been written to the NAS, the drives are working flat out for hours afterwards - I thought it might be to do with the PLEX/TVMobili updating their databases, but surely they can't be needing that much time? Any ideas would be welcome - the NAS is connected to a switch via cat5 cable. So throughput shouldn't be an issue. Thanks in advance2.8KViews0likes7Comments
