Daisy chain mode not working

Bought an RBS50Y outdoor satellite to add to the RBK50 router and 3 RBS50 indoor satellites I already have. The outdoor satellite won't go into daisy chain mode, and the router status page shows the connection status between router and outdoor sat to be poor. There's an indoor satellite that is much closer to the outdoor satellite than the router, but the outdoor satellite will only connect to the router. I have two of my other indoor satellites in daisy chain mode, so I know it works. Is there anything I can do to force the outdoor satellite to daisy chain with the indoor satellite?

Orbi is not the right product for your application.  Orbi is designed to provide blanket WiFi over a contiguous area, not to provide reliable data links between distant points.  What you really need is pairs of wireless point-point links between buildings then a wired access point inside each building for client WiFi. Point-to-point links have directional antennas and are designed to maintain good throughput and a reliable connection.  You could still use Orbi inside the main building where the Internet drop is. In theory, since you alread have them, you could wire a satellite to the point-to-point device at each building to provide client WiFi in that building, but I wouldn't recommend that if you didn't already have the sats.

I'm not trying to provide wifi inside the buildings, they are occupied by animals and tractors. The purpose of the wifi is to provide coverage for the wireless security cameras that are on the outside of and between the buildings. So it is a contiguous area that's covered by security cameras. The only place there are people are in the house where the router is.

Thanks. Slightly different application, but the technical limitations are still the same, so Orbi is still a poor fit. Orbi doesn't have directional antennas, so the sats and router cannot achieve a good stable link over the distances you're operating.  You would still be better of with PTP links and an AP on each building close to the casmeras.

    Good luck though.

  • What is the Mfr and model# of the ISP modem the NG router is connected too?

What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
What is the distance between the router and satellite(s)? 30 feet is recommended in between them to begin with depending upon building materials.

What channels are you using? Auto? Try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and any unused channel on 5Ghz.

If you updated to recent FW v.210, try enabling Daisy Chain. Some have mentioned that this seems to be working in reverse order, enabling means disabled actually. If your wanting actual daisy chaing between your satelllites, then uncheck mark Daisy Chain in the UI.

I've included the info you asked but, as I mentioned, I've had daisy chain working for a year with my existing satellites. So it would seem likely the issue is related to the new outdoor satellite I've just purchased and added to the exisiting setup.

      >> What is the Mfr and model# of the ISP modem the NG router is connected too?

      Uverse Arris BGW210

      >> What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?

It's not just the home, it's a farm. Router and one satellite are at opposite ends of the home which is 2000sf, two satellites are in a building which is 100' from the house and about 175' long, and the new outdoor sat is in a work shed about 50' from the house.

I've been running with some satellites 150' apart for a year, I moved things around to find spots that avoided trees, siding, etc, to locate spots where things worked. One of the satellites is only about 30' from the router because the house construction is in the way. The new outdoor satellite is about 50' from one of the existing indoor satellites, and about 80' from the router.

      Yes, Auto

I'm running v210 and daisy chaining has been working with one of my satellites for a year, so it can't be a problem with the setting.

  • What is the current Daisy Chain setting on the ORbi router? Checked or Unchecked?

What mode is your ISP modem running in? Router or PassThru or bridge mode? Just curious here.

The box is checked that says "Enable Daisy-Chain Topology"

My modem is in router mode, I have the orbi set to AP mode.

Ok, lets try Un-Checking Daisy Chain on the Routers UI. Save settings and apply. Then try to connect the RBSY or power cycle the RBSY to see if it connects to a satellite instead of the Router base.
