sure as the telstra cable gateway is a router
so you have 2 options
ether find out how to bridge the cable modem ( this may be a problem if you use voip for home phone ) and connect the orbi router behind it in auto ip ( ipoe ) mode
or
leave the cable modem running as it is as connect the orbi behind it and run the orbi in ap mode

btw do you have any structures ethernet cabling in your house

No Ethernet cablng throughout the hoise - unfortunately. So if I leave the cable running will it effect the stregth of the signal. My initial problem is 2 x concrete walls with steel mesh between the Telstra router and my office.

no wifi is going to cope with that not even the orbi
have you looked at power line adapters to get the signal to where its needed
