Firmware 2.3.5.30 no more connection with EX8000 possible

Dear Forum,

I am writing from Germany, so please understand if my formulations are not perfect.

The following problem: I am using Orbi RBR 50 with a satellite with firmware 2.3.1.60, in access point mode. In the basement of my house I use my previous Netgear EX8000 as a repeater (as it has 4 network interfaces) to connect to the Orbi. The EX8000's own WLAN function is deactivated, so it acts as an "access point" for my cabled devices in the basement. This worked in the past without problems.

After the update to firmware 2.3.5.30 the EX8000 can no longer connect to the Orbi. Neither with 2,4 nor with 5 ghz radio. Firmware the EX8000 is 1.0.1.202. Even a hardware reset of the EX8000 with reconfiguration did not help.

After downgrading the Orbis to 2.3.1.60 the EX8000 worked fine again.

Do you have any idea what I could do?

I am thankful about every suggestion for a solution
Rudi

  • Netgear made available today a new beta firmware for the EX8000 for me. Now the connection with the Orbit-Router with firmware 2.3.5.30 works again! I also asked Netgear for a beta for the EX7700.

  • The EX8000 has 3 radio bands:

    • Band 1: 400Mbps @2.4GHz - 256QAM
    • Band 2: 866Mbps 5Ghz - 256QAM
    • Band 3: 1733Mbps 5Ghz - 256QAM

It uses a dedicated wifi link (Band 3) towards the router (Orbi).

    1. What channels are being used in this link? Are channels 36, 40, 44 or 48 supported in this band in EX8000? What channel are you using for 5 GHz in Orbi?
    2. When looking in the management system for the EX8000, do you see the 2.4 and/or the 5 GHz channels from Orbi or the Orbi's SSID as an option to connect to?
    3. When you say "After the update to firmware 2.3.5.30 the EX8000 can no longer connect to the Orbi.". What error codes or indications you see related to this?

      ekhalil thanky for your reply

I dont think that it is a question of config of EX8000, as connection with Orbi RBK works with firmaware 2.3.1.60 and with same settings at 2.3.5.30 not

      referring to your questions:

      1) using channel 48 for 5 ghz radio and 6 for 2,4 ghz

      2) I see both radios, can also select them with password and it seems the EX8000 connects properly. But in the end it doesn't, the connection attempt is aborted at the last confirmation page of EX8000.
      3) see 2) no error code appears

from my point of view there is a bug in firmware 2.3.5.30

It can be that data related to the EX800 that is stored in the 2.3.1.60 database -for some reason- is not possible to use in the 2.3.5.30.

Can you please enable telnet in the debug page to print some data related to the EX8000, so that we can "flush" this data! :)

        1. Enable telnet on the router (from the /debug.htm page of the web interface)
        2. telnet to router
        3. After logging in, run the following print comands on the command line:
          1. Find out the MAC address of the EX8000 (the MAC of the WAN side of the EX8000), let's say the MAC address is xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
          2. nvram show | grep xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx

Luckily I still have 2 days left for support requests. I've just contacted Netgear and will report about the further development if you are interested.
