How to logon to router admin page on R6400 when attached to Orbi router.

I have a r6400 router attached to an Orbi via Ethernet on the Orbi - Orbi is attached to a cable modem.  I want to login to the R6400 locally using www.routerlogin.net but I keep getting the Orbi admin page despite logging into the R6400 WiFi channel.  Is there a way to differentiate which of the Two router login pages I can login since I have to keep both routers powered.  I have to use R6400 since I have a nAS drive attached which I cannot do with the Orbi.  Now I cannot loginto the R6400 admin page and configure the ubs nAS drive. Help appreciated.

  • Here are some general steps:

    1. Disconnect R6400 from Orbi LAN network
    2. Reboot R6400
    3. Plug a wired client directly into R6400 LAN port
    4. Login to R6400 admin page as usual
    5. Configure USB NAS drive
    6. Change R6400 to AP Mode and save the change
    7. Reboot R6400
    8. Plug R6400 back in to Orbi LAN

    Good Luck!

You have two routers on your network, which explains what you are seeing.

Two routers on your network can cause headaches. For example, you can end up with local address problems. Among other things, the other router can misdirect addresses that the Netgear router usually handles, such as routerlogin.net or the usual IP address for a router, 192.168.1.1.

This explains some of the other drawbacks.

The solution is to put the R6400 into wireless Access Point mode. This can then host the NAS drives.

In that configuration, you can access the R6400 through its IP address. You can make life easier by reserving an IP address for the R6400 and aiming your browser at that when you want to manage the thing.

One proviso is that in AP mode, you lose some of the R6400's features.

An alternative approach is to reverse the process and to use the R6400 as a router and the Orbi in AP mode.

That is what I do. My R7800 does a better job as a router, and offers more features, than the Orbi. As the whole idea is to use the Orbi for better wifi, this gives me the best of both worlds.

Another advantage of this arrangement is that I can use the Nighthawk app and the Orbi app separately to get at these things from a mobile wifi client.
