Massive Ping Spikes

This has happened before multiple times and I'm not sure if I ended up fixing it or if the problem just went away but every 15 seconds - 2 minutes I get massive ping spikes 600+ms, browsing is unaffected but any zoom call or game freezes up whenever it happens, makes trying to do anything productive extremely frustrating.

Like I said this has happened before and I've tried absolutely everything I could find online searching for similar problems. I know the problem is with my Orbi system because if I plug directly into the modem the issue goes away. My current setup is my internet providers modem with an Orbi in router mode and then a satellite in my room and my pc is connected directly into the satellite.

I've tried factory resetting the machine, changing the time zone on the machines, enabling and disabling all kinds of settings (daisy chain, wmm, etc), changing the system to AP mode and back, and more I've probably forgotten. The amount of time I've spent trying to solve this problem is crazy. One of the only things I can remember working is when I would downgrade the firmware to version 2.3.5.30. I'd do that now but whenever I try to downgrade the firmware the change doesn't stick, the upload gets to around 94% and then the system resets and is on the current version.

Looking for any solution whether it's fixing my problem downgrading my firmware or a fix to the problem overall, thanks!

What Firmware version is currently loaded?
What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?

What devices do you have all connected?

What devices are you testing pings with?

      V 2.7.3.22

I've tested pings with my computer and a laptop both wired and wirelessly experiencing the same problem on both, problem goes away when they're connected to my ISP's modem. The only devices connected to the satellite is my computer and my phone, with only a computer and a tv connected to the router.

The model of the modem is a BGW210-700

If the problem does not occur when the PC is plugged directly into the ISP modem, does it occur when the PC is plugged directly into the Orbi router?  (not into the satellite, which has a WiFi backhaul link to the router.  the idea being "absolutely NO WiFi in the connection")

If you are convinced that the problem does not exist with a previous firmware version, the router can be manually loaded with that firmware and then prevented from doing another automatic update. https://www.dropbox.com/s/29o00bhatat9vm2/FAQ%20How%20to%20Block%20Router%20Firmware%20Updates.pdf?dl=0

If this Orbi actually is the RBR50, another option is to manually install third party firmware by Voxel which many find satisfactory.

With limited testing I could not get the problem to repeat while plugged directly into my Orbi router.

I briefly looked into the custom voxel firmware and I think that's a bit too complicated for me.

It auto updating isn't exactly the issue it's that whenever I try to downgrade it never sticks, gets to around 94% and then reboots stopping the downgrade from happening. If I was able to downgrade the firmware then I would probably look into getting the auto updates to stop.

Hmmmm. That leaves one WiFi link operational when the PC is plugged into the satellite to router backhaul.

Installing Voxel's firmware for the RBR50/RBS50 is the same as installing firmware from Netgear with one wrinkle. The Orbi needs to be manually loaded with a specific version of Netgear before loading Voxel V2.5.2.4 (as explained in the Readme.1st file.)

        • Download the zip file
        • Extract the *.img file from the zip file
        • On the Orbi web interface, navigate to the Advanced Tab, Administration, Firmware Update menu
        • Select the Manual Update tab
        • Browse to the location of the *.img file and choose it.
        • Confirm update
        • Watch the progress bar until the router restarts

If you don't like Voxel, manually install Netgear firmware over it.  (Not that I am pushing Voxel.  I used it and found it worked fine, but that was over a year ago.  I didn't feel comfortable responding to questions on the forum while using non-Netgear firmware.)

This one is the killer.  If the problem persists when the PC is moved back to the desired location (or, you get complaints about that long ethernet cable in the hallway) the only other potential solution is to use ethernet cable to connect the satellite and router.  In my case, that is a "non-starter".  Too difficult/expensive to install cable.

Have no idea why a manual update will not finish.  I've done them dozens of times on two different Orbi routers. (One day I installed every firmware release from 2.3.5.0 to the present looking for when a certain feature changed.)
