Orbi rbk40 behind a switch? Ooma not working

I have a new RBK 40 system and it is working very well.  However my Ooma (VOIP) system has quit working.  As my previous wi-fi router, I plugged the Ooma directly into the Wi-FI router with no issues.  However, the RBK40 doesn't seem to want to play with the OOMA.  Since my internet router has only one port, my thoughts was to put a 5 port GigE switch behind the internet router and put the RBK40 and the OOMA behind the switch.  That would keep the RBK40 and the OOMA independent from each other.

The question is, are there any issues putting the RBK40 behind the switch instead of directly plugged into the internet router?

  • First off all I want to thank all that have contributed to this thread!  I am not a novice, but know enough to get into trouble!  I did think about looking at the port config on the orbi interface but didn't see where to add it.  Here's what Ooma recommends:

Ooma uses the following application ports for outbound data and voice traffic:

    UDP 53, UDP 123, UDP 514, UDP 1194,UDP 3386, UDP 3480, UDP 10000-30000, TCP 110, TCP 53 and TCP 443.

I hope to resolve this and if/when I do I hope to contribute to future Ooma device owners on configuring the device behind an Orbi.

    Hello parout

Typically no there shouldnt be a issue but you want to be using the orbi in AP mode if its connected to another router.

Thanks for the reply Darren!  I should be more precise in my explanation.  The switch will not be connected to a router but to a cable modem.  The orbi will plug into the switch.  So I would assume I don't need to worry about AP mode, correct?

Orbi will work (in router mode) when plugged into a modem. Orbi will work in AP mode when plugged into another router.

The key question here is what does your Ooma box require to work? Does it require a router or not?  If it does require a router, then your suggestion will not work.  If Ooma is its own router, then that explains why it did not work with Orbi initially.  But, if Ooma is a router, your sugestion stil probably will not work, because you will have two routers connected directly to your ISP, and each will require a WAN IP.

Looking at the Ooma website it reads, "Ooma is a full router capable of prioritizing voice data and directing traffic to ensure the most reliable phone service."

So, connect Orbi behind the Ooma, let Ooma do the routing, and set Orbi into access point mode.

If that doesn't work, you should work with Ooma support, as this isn't really an Orbi question.
