Orbi RBR20 dropping internet for 16 seconds every 10 minutes

Hello community

I have been searching for quite some time now, as well as analyzing the problem as thorough as possible. As stated in the title, I am experiencing a problem with my RBR20 that makes it hard to continue using my WiFi for home office.

Every 10 minutes (i.e. 600 seconds), the internet connection is unavailable from any of my internal devices. The connection is down for 16 seconds, and then is up again, for 600 seconds, and repeats itself throughout the day (and night).

I have no problems with most of the streaming services, and tiny problems with the rest, but when I try to run a VPN client from my PC towards work, the VPN is up until the internet connection drops. When the connection is up again, I have to reconnect my VPN client.

The RBR20 har the latest firmware (according to all searches) at 2.7.3.22.

I have no problems with internal communications. When the internet connection drops, all internal network traffic is running normally. I can ping my router and other devices, without any problems.

I have full ping response from internet to the external router port. So, my deductions tells me that it is the RBR20 that stops the traffic.

As stated earlier, I have been searching "everywhere" for any clues, without any luck. I have turned off the DynDNS registration, but to no avail. Other parameters have also been checked in and out, with no luck.

The only thing I haven't done yet, is factory-resetting the router. That would result in a lot of configuration, that I am very reluctant to start with at this moment.

If anyone have any clues to where/what I should continue, I'd be very happy.

What does it show on the Advanced Tab home page when you click the Blue Box Connection Status?

I'm interested in the DHCP lease that was provided by the ISP.  Spectrum assigns me a one day lease (actually 86,400 seconds).

What DHCP lease does your ISP provide.  Does the next "service break" happen when the lease is due to expire?

There are two ways to perform a Factory Reset:

    • Totally from scratch.  Yes, this can be a substantial amount of work to enter all of the configuration information that currently exists. (In my case well over two hours, with FAR too many opportunities to make typos.)
    • Reset and Restore.  With this method, memory is "cleaned out", but the configuration is simply reloaded:
      • Use the Advanced Tab, Administration, Backup Settings to make a copy of the configuration on your computer.
      • Do the paperclip routine.
      • Connect to the web administration page.
      • Proceed through the setup, ignoring changes until you get to a page where you can Continue the setup or Load a Saved Configuration.  In particular, do  not change the SSID/password.
      • Select the option to reload, then browse to that saved configuration and reload it.
      • The router will restart and the configuration will be restored, WiFi SSID/password, security questions, all IP assignments, DDNS, etc. etc.
      • This procedure can take less than 10 minutes

The lease time is 20 minutes, and the remaining time (at this point) is 12 minutes. It doesn't match with the drop interval.

Good idea, but I don't think that is the culprit.

But, I will most certainly follow your advice, and schedule, and try to "reset" my router. I think that will be much closer to a solution than anything else I've tried.

Thanks! I'll keep you posted 🙂

        Update:

I did a "reset", like you suggested, and it looks like it worked!

I was a bit reluctant, but you made a point in the fact that this operation cleared the memory. And if there were other remaining settings from earlier versions, I guess they disappeared as well.

        Thanks a bunch!
