Orbi with Verizon Fios

Hello all,

This is my first post since owning my Orbi system. I have a question I have Verizon Fios with internet tv and phone and I am currently using my Fios router G1100 as the primary router and the Orbi RBR50 set up as an access point. The back of my G1100 router have coxial and cat6 connected to wan port. So what I want to do is have my Orbi be the primary router and work in router mode. So I spoke with Verizon Fios Gateway specialist and he advised me this is not supported by Verizon, but said I can plug my cat 6 coming from my ont to the wan port of the Orbi router and run a seperate cat 6 cable from any lan port on the Orbi to the wan port of my Fios router and reboot both routers. At first I thought it woked I was able to connect to the Orbi router and turn on router mode and it did its thing. On the main screen it displayed internet status good and was broadcasting my wireless network and devices were able to connect both wireless and through lan connection, but none of my devices were able to connect to the internet. So I was wondering if anyone is running this set up and it is working? Any advice greatly appriciated.

Thanks,

Alex

  • Modem Combo Units:
This would be a double NAT condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT
    Couple of options,
    1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge mode. Then use the Orbi router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
    2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem. Then you can use the Orbi router in Router mode.
    3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the Orbi router to the modem, configure AP mode on the Orbi router. https://kb.netgear.com/31218/How-do-I-configure-my-Orbi-router-to-act-as-an-access-point and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7LOcJ8GdDo&app=desktop

Option #2 should work for you.

Has anyone had success with Option #2 with the G1100 from FiOS? I’ve read that the DMZ setting isn’t a true DMZ and there is still the double NAT problem.

Give this a try and see. Ask your ISP if the G1100 can be bridged if possible. If DMZ or bridging doesn't work, then configure the Orbi for AP mode.
