RBK 22 SERVER CONNECTIVITY ISSUES (Mac)

Hello,

I was able to set up the Orbi and so far I am seeing improvements with my devices connected via Wifi, such as my Ring cameras.  Unfortunately, there are a number of features that I had prior to using Orbi that I would like to retain from my old set up.

This is my current setup:

Verizon Quantum Gateway Router used as modem with WiFi turned off.

Orbi RBK20 connected to Verizon Router via Ethernet.

Old Mac computer used as server connected by ethernet to Verizon router.

Current Mac laptop connected via WiFi using the Orbi.

One issue is that on my network, I no longer see my old Mac computer that I use as a server.  The server no longer shows up by name on the left side in Finder. Instead, I now have to manually connect to it using the "smb://[server ip address]" in Finder.  It attaches the server, but on the left side of Finder, it recognizes it only by the IP address and not the computer name.  When I click on the folder, I now only have the option to disconnect the folder, when before, there was as "Share Screen" button that I would use to view the server screen.  After doing some fumbling around, I now can only view the screen if I use the Screen Sharing app and point to the server using the address "vnc://[server ip address]."  This was after turning off "Remote Management" and turning on "Screen Sharing" on my server.

The second issue is that, when I open up iTunes on my current Mac, I can no longer access my iTunes library in my server computer using Home Sharing.  Home Sharing is enabled on both computers using the same account.  I also have done some port forwarding on the Verizon router (because the server is connected to that and not the Orbi), but nothing has worked.

My Orbi Router Firmware is 2.3.5.30.  The server computer has an internal static IP address, has Screen Sharing, File Sharing, Printer Sharing, and Remote Login enabled; as well as Firewall turned on, but is allowing incoming connections to the services I just listed.

  • With the server connected directly to the primary router, devices connected to the Orbi are on a differet IP subnet and will not see it.

The easiest solution is to use the ORbi web interface, Advanced Tab, Advanced Settings, Router/AP to change the Orbi from router to Access Point (AP) mode.  That way, the primary router will assign IP addresses to all devices.  They will all be in the same subnet.

    Should work then.

Thanks so much. That was an easy fix. Everything appears to be working as it did before.
