RBR50 - cannot open the ADMIN site using Chrome or Edge (or certificate warnings)

I have been trying to connect to the ADMIN site hosted by my Orbi router (https://10.0.0.1) using Chrome or Edge from my laptop - and I get the following messages: from Chrome: "This site can’t be reached. The webpage at https://10.0.0.1/ might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address." from Edge: "Hmmm… can't reach this page. It looks like the webpage at https://10.0.0.1/ might be having issues, or it may have moved permanently to a new web address." I can reach the site using Firefox from my laptop and using Safari from my iPhone - but I get all kinds of warnings about security and certificates and have to circumvent them. I've tried rebooting the laptop, rebooting the routers and satellites - to no avail. FYI, my RBR50 is on the latest firmware version (2.7.4.24) Does anyone know why Chrome or Edge are blocking it - and how to set the configurations to stop the blocking (or the warnings)? I'm hoping for a solution that doesn't involve factory reset of the hardware or buying a new router. Thanks in advance for your help!

Actually, the latest firmware is v2.7.5.4. https://kb.netgear.com/000065539/RBR50-RBS50-Firmware-Version-2-7-5-4 which was released Feb 23, 2023.  If you ever get access to the router, it can be manually installed (satellites first).
    (Totally your choice.)

Not finding the IP address would happen if the laptop were connected to the Guest WiFi network rater than the primary WiFi network. (Easy to check.)

The warnings and security notifications are an awkward issue as a result of modern web browsers having implemented new protocols to "protect" users:

    • Accessing the unencrypted (http) web site prompts the "insecure" warning as it does for every attempt to access any http web site.  Knowing that (a) I am on my own LAN and (b) I am 100% certain that this IP address belongs to my router, I simply direct the web browser to proceed to the web site and it remembers this for future connections.  (If a Google search for "space alien parts" took me to an unencrypted web site, I might think twice about ignoring the warning.)
    • Accessing the encrypted (https) web site prompts a warning that the SSL certificate is self signed, which it has to be.  Up until about 3 years ago, Netgear had registered several URLs and got a signed certificate. (routerlogin.com, orbilogin.com, orbilogin.net, and several others).  That SSL certificate was not renewed, possibly because those thousands of web sites are not actually run by Netgear (but by thousands of customers all around the world).  Netgear began shipping a self signed SSL certificate with their routers.  Once again, (a) I am on my LAN, and (b) I know that this IP address is my router.  So I direct the web browser to proceed to the IP address.  (If a Google Search led me to a web site that had a self signed SSL certificate, I would perhaps wonder, "why didn't they get a real certificate?")

In short, no one can stop Chrome and Edge (based on Chrome) from complaining about the Orbi web site.  I use Firefox or Opera.  Eventually they may also activate those user protections.

    .

    • Thanks for all of the information - very helpful!

I'm wary of the update and whether or not it will break more than it fixes (seems like mixed results when I search Google for whether or not that would be the case). Is 2.7.5.4 safe to install?

Neither the laptop (nor my other devices) are connected to the guest Wifi - all are on the main Wifi.

FYI, Google and Chrome are not even giving me an option to proceed to the ADMIN web site - either using http or https. Just wondering how I can force them to allow the browser to proceed to the sites?  (I am also only doing this from my local LAN - so I know that 10.0.0.1 is my local router.)

      Thanks.

    • Thanks - is 2.7.5.4 safe to upgrade to - or will things potentially get worse if I do it?

Why are you trying to contact that address?

By default, the RBR50 will pick 192,168.1.1 as its default IP address for the local network.

The router will use10.0.0.1 if it sees something else already in that address. In most cases this means that when you set up the RBR50 it saw another router between it and the Internet. In that case you are into double "NAT country".

Perhaps that explains the odd behaviour you see.

It is correct that Netgear routers default to 192.168.1.1 for their LAN interface and change to 10.0.0.1 when their WAN interface is assigned an IP in the 192.168.1.x subnet. (and also generally a result of having more than one router.)  But that is not irrelevant to the discussion.

    • Firefox (Windows) and Safari (iPhone) connect to the router web interface at 10.0.0.1 with the usual security warnings, but
    • Chrome and Edge (Windows) respond that that 10.0.0.1 cannot be found.

The solution is to use Firefox on Windows and Safari on Apple devices.

The question is what would cause Chrome and Edge (based on Chrome) to display this message and what can be done to those browsers to prevent that from happening.

They all differ in their security barriers.

Edge happily connects to routers here but with the usual health warnings. And not all of these devices are on 192.168.1.1.

I have another router on 192.168.2.1. This has the 192.168.1.1 one as 192.168.2.174 in the DMZ for the first router.

Edge sees both 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.2.1.

Would that approach work with the first, or second router on 10.0.0.1?

It is a while since I set up my network.

My AT&T router is at 192.168.1.254 - but Chrome and Edge can see it.  That router is using http instead of https - and I get a "Not secure" warning in both of those browsers - but they both can pull up the site from that router no problem.

Why does it make a difference that the IP for my Orbi is 10.0.0.1 (vs. 192.168.x.x)? Or is it that it is https the issue?

        Thanks.

    • Yes - what would cause Chrome and Edge to display those messages and what can be done to those browsers to prevent that from happening with 10.0.0.1?
