RBR50 WiFi Drops

I have the Orbi RBR50 and having issues with wifi dropping at night sporatically. All of my hard wired connected devices remain connected to the internet and working fine but the wifi doesn't work. I've reviewed the orbi logs and the only log entry that shows a possible issue would be an entry with this tag: [Internet connected]. My theory is that if there is any type of modem reset from my ISP that orbi can't handle this reconnection for wifi but it works fine for their hard wired ports. I'm not sure how else to troubleshoot this issue so asking for any help the community can offer up. It's getting pretty annoying having to reset my orbi so frequently to get wifi to work again. My device firmware is update to date (V2.5.0.38).

Thanks!

  • The firmware you have installed is your problem. That version was pulled by Netgear due to issues similar to what you're experiencing. You can roll back to version 2.3.5.30 or upgrade to version 2.5.1.8. I recommend rolling back to 2.3.5.30 as it seems to be the most stable recent version. 2.5.1.8 has only been out for about a week so there aren't too many folks running it yet. I'm waiting for another week to upgrade but, even then I may not. If it isn't broken, don't fix it. After you rollback or upgrade, do a factory reset of all ORBIs (satellites and router) and reconfigure them from scratch–not from a backup config file. It can be a real PITA but it will remove any vestiges of old firmware that could conflict and cause issues. Plan on taking several hours to do this. Also, always upgrade/rollback the satellites first, then do the router. After all the equipment has "new" firmware installed, then do a factory reset of all the ORBIs. Again satellites first.

    Good luck!

What is the Mfr and model# of the ISP modem the NG router is connected too?

What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
What is the distance between the router and satellite(s)? 30 feet is recommended in between RBR and RBS to begin with depending upon building materials when wirelessly connected. https://kb.netgear.com/000036466/How-far-should-I-place-my-Orbi-satellite-from-my-Orbi-router

What channels are you using? Auto? Try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and any unused channel on 5Ghz.
Any Wifi Neighbors near by? If so, how many?

Try enabling Beamforming and MIMO(MIMO may or maynot be needed) and WMM. Under Advanced Tab/Advanced Settings/Wireless Settings

Try disabling the following and see:
Armor, Circle, Daisy Chain, Fast Roaming, IPv6 and Set 20/40Mhz Coexistence to 40Mhz only. Save settings and reboot the router and satellite(s).

Has a factory reset and setup from scratch been performed since last FW update?

Been running v2.5.1.8. Doing good thus far:

Thanks for the suggestions. Here are more details around how things are configured now and my one remaining issue.

      - ISP modem -> xfinity xFi Gateway (TG3482G)

      - house -> 2500 sq. ft.

      - orbi devices about 20'-30' apart (satellites on floors 1 and 3 while main orbi router is on floor 2)

      - 2.4 was set to 'auto' but updated to be on channel 6 (used wifi inspector: https://www.cambiumnetworks.com/products/software/free-tools/)

      - enabled beamforming

      - updated firmware to 2.5.1.8 (took the risk...)

I have one problem after this upgrade though since all my devices no longer show up in the attached devices list anymore through the admin web portal and also through the latest ios app. I didn't perform a factor reset after the firmware upgrade though since I wasn't sure what exactly i would have to reconfigure as a result of this.

      Thanks!
