RBS50 firmware
Received email from netgear of firmware updates for satellites and router to 2.3.5.34 (RBR 40) and 2.5.1.8 for (RBS50).
My current firmware for (RBR40) is 2.3.5.34 (no update needed) but my RBS50 is running 2.3.5.30 according to my system when I have it check for updates. And the check tells me nothing needs to be updated, router or satellite (I have 3 satellites, two RBS20s and one RBS50).
My question is how can my RBS50 firmware # be so far off? How do the update numbers run? Is 2.5.1.8 more current than 2.3.5.30? What portion of the number should I focus on the 2.5.... or the .30 at the end? Don't know whether I should do the update on the satellite or not. Can I in fact go from 2.3.5.30 to 2.5.1.8?
Thanks so much,
Phyllis

Based on my personal experience on 2.5.1.8, I would suggest do not upgrade to that version. it is buggy.

Yes, firmware is numbered from most significant digit to least - left to right. So, 2.5. (anything) is more recent than 2.3.(anything).What portion of the number should I focus on the 2.5.... or the .30 at the end? Don't know whether I should do the update on the satellite or not. Netgear had a horrible experience in late 2019 when they released an update from 2.3.5.30 that completely messed up the Device Naming feature and failed to address complaints about the expired SSL certificate. That firmware update disappeared and in December they released 2.5.1.8. For at least two months, this latest version has been available for download from the Netgear support site, but when users look on the Orbi Firmware Update web page, they do not see it. In the past week or so, users have been commenting on seeing "new firmware" on their Orbi app and getting email about it. MY GUESS, and this is only a guess, is that Netgear has decided the risks for people updating to 2.5.1.8 are not significant and they want to encourage people to do so.
I, personally, have no problems with 2.5.1.8. There are SOME USERS, however, who experience major issues with it. The forum has a LONG post about "2.5.1.8" that you might want to read through.
If your Orbi is doing what you want, there is no urgent need to update the firmware to this release.

For RBS50, updating would be prudent. As long as your RBR40 is running well, leave that were it's at. You can manually apply v2.5.1.8 to the RBS and it will work for you. If you seem to run into problems with the RBS after the update, factory reset the RBS50 and re-sync it.
