School laptop is throwing a "your connection is not private" error
NOTE: I can't find the RBR40 model router to list but that is what I have.
My daughter brought home her school laptop and we are having an issue.
Her school uses a portal called "Clever". She logs into the portal and then is able to access all of the school's online student resources by simply clicking on the app from the portal. For example, she can use this to access McGraw hill, her school Gmail, and Schoology.
She can log into Clever fine. However, once in, she gets an error every time she clicks on a service. The error reads:
Your connection is not private
Attackers might be trying to steal your information from clever.com (for example, passwords, messages, or credit cards). Learn More
Net::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID
There is a button labeled Advanced and a button labeled Reload.
The Learn More link leads to a page for Google Chrome on fixing connection issues that is of no help here.
Reload does not fix anything.
Clicking advanced opens the following text.
clever.com normally uses encryption o protect your information. When Chrome tried to connect to clever.com this time, the website sent back unusual and incorrect credentials. This may happen when an attacker is trying to pretend to be clever.com, or a Wi-Fi sign-in screen has interrupted the connection. Your information is still secure because Chrome stop the connection before any data was exchanged.
You cannot visit clever.com right now because website uses HSTS. Network errors and attacks are usually temporary, so this page will probably work later.
I have disabled parental controls entirely and the problem is persisting. I do not have an Armor subscription.
Any thoughts or ideas on what to do? She'd really like to do her homework 🙂

With this being a school laptop, you may not have the option of loading a different web browser (sigh).
Modern browsers have become almost fanatical about protecting us from ourselves.
- They throw a fit if we attempt to connect to a web site that is not encrypted, such as (http://orbilogin.net )
- They refuse to connect if they detect anything unusual about the SSL certificate supplied by the web site.
(The most common complaint is about self-signed SSL certificates, such as the one Netgear uses on (https://orbilogin.net ) the encrypted version of the Orbi web interface.
It is not clear (to me) what Chrome means by "website sent back unusual and incorrect credentials".
Most of the time, I locate the option, often in very tiny print, that says, "go there anyway". The browser opens the web site, logs my instructions, and never bothers me again.
Try internet search for Chroms "website sent back unusual and incorrect credentials".

There are absolutely no options to proceed anyway. The solution it is giving me is "wait and try again" but I've been trying for two days.

The other note is that it only does this on our network. The Chromebook and Chrome browser work fine on other networks. Just ours.
What modem/gateway is the router connected to?
do any other devices have issues logging into this clever site from your home network?

Ok, general update on things.
I logged into the web interface and found where mac address access control was toggled on but was set to allow all new mac addresses (which is what I would want). Somehow my daugher's Echo and her phone (both items she hadn't mentioned had been having problems but were) were blocked. I was able to unblock her phone but despite trying twice to unblock the Echo, it remained blocked. No other devices were listed as blocked.
However, as soon as I switched off access control, the problems with her school laptop (which intermittently couldn't load most/all websites), my wife's phone, and everything else were fixed.
I'm not sure why access control was blocking things it shouldn't or won't let me unblock her Echo but that was the problem. Being that I was allowing all mac addresses already, turning control off isn't a big deal at the moment but I hate to lose a feature.
Router is up to date on firmware and has been restarted several times since the update. It is connected to our Netgear CM1100 modem.
I'd hate to have to reset the router and re-do my whole setup but I'm wondering if that is the reasonable next step to restore access control working properly.
Thanks for all the help and chiming in so far. It is greatly appreciated.
