Setup advise - Orbi RBR20 + Night Hawk R7000P
Firstly thank you for taking your time to look through my request.
Looking for some advise on setting up a network for smart home devices, previously I was using my night hawk but I was experiencing huge issues gaming and streaming on my network. In total I have about 50 devices that I would like to connect included would be 2 gaming computers that I attempted giving priority with QOS settings previously but experienced quite allot of lag while gaming, also general internet connectivity was problematic. I have recently purchased the orbi as this was capable of 250 devices by itself and with superior wifi coverage, but I was wondering before I start setting everything up again is their a way to utilise the R7000P Night Hawk.
My current setup is ONT>Nighthawk
Ethernet from nighthawk : Switch, Orbi
Note: switch has one server attached which requires 5mbit upload for streaming purposes
I'm using the Xiaomi home range of smart devices
detailed layout attached
Look forward to any advise provided

Some observations.
- Unless there is some specific feature on the R7000 that you require/enjoy, the R7000 is not "getting you anything".
All it does is introduce another "hop" in the path. I doubt that the additional latency is large.
Since there is a switch right there, the additional ethernet port of the R7000 is not significant. - I am puzzled about the idea that Orbi is capable of supporting more devices than the R7000.
Would like to see a reference document.
If this is in regard to the size of the potential DHCP pool (1-250), I think that is misleading.
The things that put strain on a WiFi router are high bandwidth devices, not the total number of devices. - While I am very happy with the two Orbi systems I have installed (in different houses), one of the areas where the forum sees a lot of complaints is gaming. There are other WiFi routers which appear to be designed specifically to support gaming.
The strength of Orbi is WiFi coverage and separate 5G channel for backhaul between satellite and router.
Don't know if I have contributed much. Sorry.
p.s. LOVE the diagram. "Well done!"

You can turn OFF the wifi radios on the R7000 router and connect up and configure the Orbi for AP mode.
