Very slow Wi-Fi with Orbi RBR20

Hello,

Since I moved to my new house I got a very unstable and slow Wi-Fi connection/network. The strange thing is that with my Wi-Fi of the actual service provider the connection is way better. How is this possible? Could it have something to do that I switched to another service provider?

Bit of extra info: both the Router and Satellite have the same issues. Meaning that downstairs if I watch Netflix on the Orbi network I can't watch any show without interruptions and bad quality, but when I switch to the network of my Service Provider no issues at all. Both modems are pretty much next to each other.

I already tried rebooting the Orbi, no results there. They should run the latest firmware v2.7.3.22. Also the Router is wired by Ethernet so that can't be it.

Hoping that someone could help me resolve, if any additional info is needed let me know!

Thanks in advance!

  • You put, "when you switch" to your isp's service. Are you saying the ISP's router?
What modem/gateway is it connected to?
If it has its own integrated router, its causing a double nat.

A double nat happens when you cascade more than 1 router.

Fixes? There’s 3 options but only use 1.
    1. Put the modem/gateway in modem only/pass through mode. This disables its routing functions.
    2. Leave the modem/gateway in router mode but put the Netgears IP address into its DMZ. This forwards the data to the netgear. You can either leave the modem/gateway’s wireless enabled or disabled. Just make sure its using a different wifi channel to prevent interference
    3. Put the Netgear into access point mode. This disables its routing functions. Wifi/ethernet still works but it does disable some features.

    Hi Richards95,

I understand that you are having connectivity issues with your RBR20. This issue occurs when the Orbi is introduced to the network. It seems to be a configuration issue between the ISP router and the Orbi.

plemans is correct, putting your Orbi system into Access Point mode can resolve this issue.

To switch to access point mode please follow the steps below:

    1. First, navigate to orbilogin.com
    2. Next, on the home page navigate to ADVANCED > Advanced Setup > Router / AP Mode.
    3. Then, select the AP mode radio button.

      Hi Kevin,

It seems to be fixed for now. Strange thing is that it already was in AP modus... I just followed the steps again and now the internet speed is pretty much the same as when I connect to the ISP Wi-Fi. I'll test it out the upcoming days and will come back if there are any issues. Thanks for your support.
