Video dropouts - disconnect from Wireless IP cams?

I bought a 3-piece Orbi kit (one router, 2x satellites) last Friday. The installation was a breeze and I couldn't be happier with the coverage in my 4000sq.feet - two level home.

I have smokin fast internet everywhere and in all my mobile devices, computers and Smart TVs, door lock, Ring, everything works flawlessly BUT... the IP cameras.

The main reason I upgraded to Orbi in the first place.

I have 8 identical wireless 2MP 1080 Jannov cameras (with generic Shenzhen Bilian Electonic Co. chipset) around the house' exterior wall connected at full signal strength over the 2.4GHz band usually to the nearest satellite or main router.

An NVR is hard wired to the router. All cameras have reserved static IPs and power supplies tested good.

Despite all that they seldom did all 8 work. Most of the time the video stream in one or more cameras dropped out, or froze or they disconnected altogether. I didn't matter on which satellite they were connected or if they were connected directly to the router. It didn't matter if the video was in color and motion intensive or still and black and white.

I rebooted the router, the satellites tenths of times and then when the network was up and running I rebooted the cameras too in order to force them to connect to the nearest node. I checked unchecked MU-MIMO, Implicit Beamforming, and a bunch of other options always rebooting after every change. I turned off Circle by Disney parental controls just in case this was the problem. I upgraded to the latest firmware (2.3.0.28) and even tried other satellite placements even though the backhaul link was always reported as Good.

I have spent most of the weekend trying to make them work and then I gave up as they still dropped out seemingly randomly.

I was about to switch back to my old main router and WiFi extender setup when I stumbled upon a reddit thread about this exact same problem.

Thank You BeBuBi!

You saved me from alot of frustration and now my Orbi network is playing nice with the surveillance system as it was intented to be!

  • The house is 230m2 on each floor - two floors. The distance between router (ground level) and each satellite on upper floor is approximately 15m.

The modem is a Genexis DRG886. The automatically chosen channel was 6.

But all this are of no importance because I have never had any problem with extrenal routing to/from internet or all the other WiFi devices. Only the cameras disconnected.

Short preamble did not help as well - IT FIXED IT! :)

  • What Firmware is currently loaded?
What is the Mfr and model# of the ISP modem the NG router is connected too?

What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?
What is the distance between the router and satellite(s)? 30 feet is recommended in between them to begin with depending upon building materials when wirelessly connected.

What channels are you using? Auto? Try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and any unused channel on 5Ghz.

Glad the Preamble change helped as well.

Glad it fixed it. Thanks for confirming.

FYI about your ISP ONT. Seems to be a gateway router as well. If yoru not having issues then thats fine.

        Modem Combo Units:
This would be a double NAT condition which isn't recommended. Couple of options,
        1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge mode. Then use the Orbi router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
        2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem. Then you can use the Orbi router in Router mode.
        3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the Orbi router to the modem, configure AP mode on the Orbi router. https://kb.netgear.com/31218/How-do-I-configure-my-Orbi-router-to-act-as-an-access-point and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7LOcJ8GdDo&app=desktop
